Збережемо нашу Полтаву!

Відкритий лист (звернення) начальнику Полтавської обласної військової адміністрації Дмитру Сергійовичу Луніну, Міському голові Полтави Олександру Федоровичу Мамаю та депутатам Полтавської міської ради

Шановні панове,

з подивом ми дізналися, що Експертна рада при Міністерстві культури та інформаційної політики України рекомендує Полтавській ОВА та Полтавській міськраді демонтувати Монумент (колону) Слави, пам’ятник на місці відпочинку Петра та пам’ятник славним захисникам Полтави і коменданту фортеці Олексію Келіну. Таке рішення викликає побоювання, що нам знову, як і сто років тому за доби войовничого більшовизму, намагатимуться нав’язати категоричне та нецивілізоване ставлення до минулого. Цей підхід суперечить сучасній позитивній світовій практиці і є неприйнятним для України, майбутнього члена ЄС, попри всі жахи сьогоднішньої війни.

Невже, як і за радянських часів, витвори монументального мистецтва будуть оцінюватися Міністерством з позицій ідеологічного детермінізму? Ми, полтавці, давно змінили своє ставлення до цих пам’ятників, здійснили їхнє переосмислення та переозначення. Тисячі полтавців – справжніх патріотів України – є живим свідченням того, що ці монументи давно втратили свою ідеолого-виховну функцію і стали невід’ємним елементом міського ландшафту та навіть родинної історії. 

Ми усвідомлюємо, що для виконання такої рекомендації ради немає жодних законних підстав, оскільки всі зазначені пам’ятники захищені Законом України «Про охорону культурної спадщини». Звертаємо Вашу увагу, що рекомендації експертів не можуть бути підставою для порушення Закону. Зазначені пам’ятники є визначними всесвітньовідомими автентичними пам’ятками монументального мистецтва і архітектури ХІХ-початку ХХ ст., не містять імперської символіки (крім рельєфного зображення герба російської імперії на пам’ятнику на місці відпочинку Петра; вважаємо, що цей герб можливо безболісно демонтувати й музеєфікувати) і визначають індивідуальність обличчя Полтави. Демонтаж призведе до втрати пам’ятників і завдасть непоправної шкоди унікальному історичному середовищу Полтави, яка водночас втратить і свою туристичну привабливість.

Сподіваємося, що Вам не хотілося б увійти в історію тими очільниками Полтави, які, першими за два століття, остаточно зруйнують і її минуле, і її майбутні перспективи. Закликаємо Вас проявити мудрість і виваженість та під час війни в жодному разі не вдаватися до демонтажу зазначених пам’яток монументального мистецтва (щоб не викликати суспільного збурення з непередбачуваними наслідками), а розпочати процес вирішення питання в такий спосіб:

1. Поряд із кожним із зазначених об’єктів виставити стенди з інформацією-поясненням, якій події він присвячений і як ця подія зараз переосмислюється, чому він вважається видатним твором мистецтва із зазначенням, що питання про формат його подальшого експонування буде вирішуватися міською громадою шляхом публічних обговорень.

2. З метою розвінчання імперських міфів про події Північної війни і Полтавської битви зокрема, розпочати широку просвітницьку кампанію з висвітлення фактів історичної битви, що мала вплив на геополітичний розвиток Європи. Першочерговими заходами вважаємо негайне оновлення інформації про пам’ятники на усіх доступних інтернет-ресурсах і розміщення науково-популярних дописів на сторінках соціальних мереж.

3. Розпочати публічні обговорення про можливі подальші формати експонування названих пам’ятників як видатних мистецьких творів, свідчень важливої і невід’ємної складової історії Полтави, враховуючи їхнє важливе містобудівне значення та цінність як туристичних ресурсів й активів.

4. Предметом публічних дискусій неодмінно має стати також переосмислення, заміна наративу про Полтаву як міста «перемоги російської армії Петра І» на Полтаву – яку? Обговорення можливостей втілення нового наративу про Полтаву з урахуванням важливого значення події Полтавської битви 1709 року в контексті загальноєвропейської історії.

Let's protect the Monuments of Poltava from dismantling!

Let's save our Poltava!

An open letter of appeal to:
The Head of the Poltava Regional Military Administration, Dmytro Lunin;
The Mayor of Poltava, Oleksandr Mamai;
and The Deputies of the Poltava City Council.

Dear Mr Lunin, Mr Mamai and Deputies,

We were surprised to learn that the Expert Council within the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, recommends that the Poltava Regional Military Administration and the Poltava City Council should dismantle the Monument of Glory (the Column), the monument at Peter's resting place, and the monument to the famous defenders of Poltava and the commandant of the fortress, Oleksiy Kelin. Such a decision raises fears that they will again try to impose on us a categorical and uncivilized attitude to the past, as their predecessors did a hundred years ago during the days of militant Bolshevism. This approach contradicts modern positive world practice and is unacceptable for Ukraine, a future member of the EU, despite all the horrors of today's war.

Why should such monumental artworks be evaluated by the Ministry from the standpoint of ideological determinism, as in Soviet times? A long time ago we, the Poltava residents, changed our attitude to these monuments and reinterpreted and redefined them. Thousands of citizens of Poltava - true patriots of Ukraine - are living proof that these monuments have long since lost their ideological educational function and have become an integral element of the city’s landscape and even family history.

There are no legal grounds for implementing such a recommendation of the Expert Council, as all the mentioned monuments are protected by the Law of Ukraine "On Protection of Cultural Heritage". We draw your attention to the fact that the recommendations of experts cannot be the basis for violating this Law. The mentioned monuments are world-famous authentic monuments of monumental art and architecture of the 19th and early 20th centuries and form the individuality of Poltava. Dismantling will lead to the loss of the monuments and cause irreparable damage to the unique historical environment of Poltava, which will also lose its tourist attraction. [The exception is the relief image of the Russian Imperial coat of arms on the monument at Peter's resting place; we believe that this coat of arms can be painlessly dismantled and put into a museum.]

We hope that you don’t want to go down in history as those leaders of Poltava who, for the first time in two centuries, will finally destroy both its past and future prospects. We urge you to show wisdom and prudence and, during the war, in no case resort to the dismantling of the mentioned monuments of monumental art so as not to cause public unrest with unpredictable consequences. We urge you to resolve the issue as follows:

1. Next to each of the specified monuments, put display stands with explanatory information about the connected event and its reinterpretation, why it is considered an outstanding work of art, and a statement that the issue of the monuments further exhibition will be decided by the city community through public discussions.

2. In order to debunk imperial myths about the events of the Northern War and the Battle of Poltava in particular, launch a broad educational campaign to highlight the facts of the historical battle that had an impact on the geopolitical development of Europe. We consider the priority to be an updating of information about monuments on all available Internet resources and posting of popular science articles on social media pages.

3. To start public discussions about possible ways to exhibiting these monuments as outstanding works of art, and the evidence of their important and integral part of Poltava’s history, taking into account their important urban planning significance and value as tourist resources and assets.

4. The subject of public discussions must also be the review and replacement of the narrative about Poltava as the city of the ‘Victory of the Peter I’s Russian Army’. There should be a discussion about implementing a new narrative about Poltava, taking into account the important significance of the Battle of Poltava in 1709 in the context of European history.
