Σώστε τη Λίμνη Μαγκλή: Κάλεσμα για την προστασία ενός εκ των τελευταίων αστικών βιότοπων της Κύπρου

Η λίμνη Μαγκλή βρίσκεται στην Λευκωσία και συγκεκριμένα στην περιοχή του Αρχάγγελου. Βρίσκεται δίπλα στον Πεδιαίο ποταμό και το γραμμικό πάρκο της Λευκωσίας και αποτελεί ένα χώρο ηρεμίας και χαλάρωσης. Η περιοχή είναι απαράμιλλης φυσικής ομορφιάς και αποτελεί ένα από τους ελάχιστους αστικούς βιότοπους της Κύπρου. Παρόλα αυτά η λίμνη αποτελεί ιδιωτική περιουσία, και αυτός είναι ο κύριος λόγος που παραμένει έρμαιο πολλών κινδύνων που την απειλούν, αφού καμία αρμόδια υπηρεσία δεν δικαιούται να επέμβει για να την προστατεύσει.

Η ευρύτερη φυσική περιοχή παραμένει απροστάτευτη, και η λίμνη αντιμετωπίζει σήμερα σοβαρά προβλήματα. Η στάθμη του νερού βρίσκεται σε χαμηλότερο σημείο από ότι έχουμε παρατηρήσει τα τελευταία είκοσι τουλάχιστον χρόνια. Η ραγδαία αστική ανάπτυξη μέχρι και τους πρόποδες της λίμνης, η αδιαφορία, και άλλα προβλήματα όπως η έντονη αλιεία και η απουσία κάδων, έχουν τεράστιες αρνητικές επιπτώσεις στο οικοσύστημα, με τους οργανισμούς που ζουν στην περιοχή να έχουν μειωθεί δραματικά.

Εντός της λίμνης και γύρω από αυτήν έχει σχηματιστεί ένα πολύτιμο οικοσύστημα διαφόρων ειδών όπως ψάρια, φυτά, πουλιά, ερπετά, αμφίβια και θηλαστικά, το οποίο κινδυνεύει άμεσα αν δεν βρεθεί λύση για την προστασία της λίμνης.

Έπειτα από εντατική έρευνα από μέλη της ομάδας μας, έχουν εντοπιστεί δύο πολύ σημαντικά υδρόβια φυτά: το Najas marina subsp. armata και το Potamogeton perfoliatus, που περιλαμβάνονται στο Κόκκινο Βιβλίο της Χλωρίδας της Κύπρου. Το πρώτο είδος κατατάσσεται ως εύτρωτο, ενώ το δεύτερο ως κινδυνεύον! 

 Επιπλέον, στην περιοχή φιλοξενούνται αρκετά προστατευόμενα είδη πτηνών όπως ο σταχτοτσικνιάς (Grey Heron), ο μελισσοφάγος (European Bee-eater),  η αλκυόνη (alcedo atthis), ο κοκκινολαίμης (European Robin), η πρασινοκέφαλη πάπια (Mallard), η νερόκοτα (Galinulas chloropis), καθώς και είδη νυχτερίδων και άλλα νυκτόβια ζώα.

Συγκεκριμένα, η λίμνη είναι συνιδιοκτησία και ανήκει σε ιδιωτικές κατασκευαστικές εταιρίες και στην Ιερά Μονή Κύκκου. Τα τελευταία χρόνια οι ιδιοκτήτες προχώρησαν σε διαχωρισμό οικοπέδων και ανέγερση κατοικιών στους πρόποδες τις λίμνης. Η καταστροφή του φυσικού περιβάλλοντος λόγω της αποκοπής δέντρων είναι εμφανέστατη, ενώ παρόλο που η λεκάνη της λίμνης βρίσκεται σε ζώνη προστασίας ΔΑ3 παραμένει απροστάτευτη και ανεκμετάλλευτη. Επιπλέον η πρόθεση των ιδιοκτητών είναι να απαλλαχθεί από ζώνη προστασίας με απώτερο σκοπό την αποστράγγιση της λίμνης. 

Το φυσικό περιβάλλον πρέπει να προστατευθεί και να σταματήσει η καταστροφή του στον βωμό του χρήματος.

Απαιτούμε όπως η λίμνη Μαγκλή περιέλθει στο δημόσιο ούτως ώστε να ληφθούν μέτρα προστασίας και διατήρησης της, καθώς και να αξιοποιηθεί με τον τρόπο που της αξίζει, αναγεννώντας τη χλωρίδα και πανίδα της, και δημιουργώντας ένα χώρο πρασίνου και ξεκούρασης στο αστικό τσιμέντο.

Save Manglis Lake: A call to protect one of Cyprus' last urban habitats

Manglis Lake is located in Nicosia, specifically in the Archangelos area. It is situated next to the Pedieos River and the Nicosia Linear Park, serving as a space for relaxation and tranquility. The area boasts exceptional natural beauty and is one of the few urban habitats in Cyprus. However, Manglis Lake is privately owned, which is the main reason it remains vulnerable to numerous threats, as no public authority has the right to intervene and protect it.

The surrounding natural area remains unprotected, and the lake is currently facing severe issues. The water level is at its lowest point in at least the last twenty years. Rapid urban development extending right up to the lake's banks, general neglect, and other issues such as overfishing and the lack of waste bins are having severe negative impacts on the ecosystem. The number of organisms living in the area has dramatically declined.

A valuable ecosystem has formed within and around the lake, consisting of various species like fish, plants, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. This ecosystem is in immediate danger if a solution for the lake’s protection is not found.

Through extensive research conducted by our team members, two significant aquatic plant species have been identified: Najas marina subsp. armata and Potamogeton perfoliatus, both of which are listed in the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus. The former is classified as vulnerable, while the latter is considered endangered!

Additionally, several protected bird species inhabit the area, including the Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), the European Bee-eater (Merops apiaster), the Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), the European Robin (Erithacus rubecula), the Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), the Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus), as well as various species of bats and other nocturnal animals.

Manglis Lake is co-owned by private construction companies and the Kykkos Monastery. In recent years, the owners have proceeded with dividing plots of land and constructing homes near the lake’s banks. The destruction of the natural environment due to tree removal is highly evident. Despite the fact that the lake basin is located in a protected zone (DA3), it remains unguarded and underutilized. Additionally, the owners intend to have the protection status of the lake lifted, with the ultimate goal of draining the lake.

The natural environment must be safeguarded, and the destruction of this area in the name of profit must stop.

We demand that Manglis Lake be transferred to public ownership so that protective and conservation measures can be implemented. This would allow for the proper management and revitalization of its flora and fauna, turning it into a green space and a place of rest within the urban landscape.
