Petition to the Municipality of Rhodes: Immediate Action for the Stray Cats of Rhodes

To: The Mayor and Municipal Council of Rhodes

🐾 Background

For decades, volunteers in Rhodes have dedicated their time, effort, and personal resources to help the island’s stray animals. Despite repeated promises by the Municipality to support and implement spay-and-neuter programs, no consistent action has been taken, and the situation has worsened.

In the past two years, the number of stray cats has increased dramatically. Volunteers are exhausted — financially, emotionally, and physically — as they continue to provide food, sterilizations, and care entirely on their own.

⚠️ The Problem

There is no municipal sterilization program for stray cats. There is no support for food, medical care, or urgent needs.

Volunteers have been left alone to handle an uncontrolled situation.

This inaction leads to unnecessary suffering for the animals, rapid growth of stray populations, and increasing frustration among residents and visitors.

✅ Our Requests

We, the undersigned, call on the Municipality of Rhodes to immediately:

Implement a comprehensive and ongoing sterilization program in cooperation with all local veterinarians, fully funded by the Municipality.

Provide food and veterinary assistance to volunteers who care for strays.

Ensure transparency in municipal funding and dedicate part of the budget to animal welfare.

Integrate compassion for animals into Rhodes’ tourism and community planning as a reflection of the island’s values and image.

💚 Why It Matters

A single, well-organized sterilization program could dramatically reduce the number of strays within a year. Residents and tourists would enjoy a cleaner, kinder environment, while the Municipality would demonstrate genuine leadership and compassion.

The funds exist — what’s missing is political will.

That animals suffer on the streets,  this cannot be justified. Not morally nor socially.

📣 Call to Action

We urge the Municipality of Rhodes to act now — with a practical realistic programm, not “next year,” not “when the clinic is ready,” but now.

Help us help the animals, and let Rhodes become an example of humanity and responsibility for all of Greece.
