STOP THE 401 HIGHLAND PAVING PLANT!

The Issue

We, the undersigned property owners of Harnett County, NC, do hereby strongly and respectfully protest the future US 401 N, Highland Paving asphalt plant on the following described property: PIN 0651-31-5031.000.

Asphalt plants are major sources of cancer-causing toxic air pollutants including arsenic, benzene, formaldehyde, cadmium, volatile organic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and very fine condensed particulates. These contaminants are known to cause cancer, shortness of breath, severe skin irritation, headaches, dizziness, and nausea.

The Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League (BREDL) has performed studies on the adverse impacts on property values documenting losses of up to 56%. Other concerns are smell, noise, proximity to hospital and EMS services, and the danger of increased heavy equipment operating in an already treacherous stretch of US 401 N.

In addition, the endangerment of the river basin which is home to the Cape Fear Shiner minnow, which is an endangered species and an integral resource known to only exist in our watershed.

We, the undersigned, have personally signed this Petition and are owners of real property, as well as residents, business owners and employees, located within the area where plant is being built.
