Apology to the LGBTQ+ Community on behalf of Christians

Apology to the LGBTQ+ Community on behalf of Christians
The Issue
Every year, LGBTQ+ people gather for a sense of community, belonging, support, celebration, and love at Gay Prides across the world during Pride month in June. This year, gathering is impossible. We know many LGBTQ+ people will be grieving the lost opportunity to gather, while being disproportionately and adversely affected by COVID-19. Worse, many LGBTQ+ teens are closeted or stuck in home environments that are unsafe, or facing homelessness in this tumultuous time.
Since 2012, LOVEboldly has had a presence at Gay Pride events in Kentucky and Ohio to apologize for the ways Christians have sometimes failed to be good friends, neighbors, and supportive influences for LGBTQ+ people. Our goal for our outreach at Pride events is to share practical acts of God’s love and kindness with the LGBTQ+ community in hopes we might repair some of the damage done in relationships between LGBTQ+ people and the church.
With Pride canceled and the LGBTQ+ community needing connection and support more than ever, we have an opportunity as Christians to step up and change the message LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors have heard from us in the past. Last year we distributed over 400 apology messages like this one to Pride attendees in Kentucky and Ohio in under two hours! This year, with Prides around the globe being canceled, we are partnering with My Anchor Holds to declare #WeAllBelong, sharing messages of love, encouragement, and apology to our LGBTQ+ friends. (Check out My Anchor Holds "Belong Here" song on Spotify now!)
Can you help us counter messages of…
- Shame
- Judgement
- Rejection
- Disgust
- Humiliation
…that our LGBTQ+ friends are accustomed to hearing?
