We, the undersigned, call on the international community and the United Nations to ensure justice for the late Pakistani journalist, Arshad Sharif. We urge you to inquire into the facts and circumstances surrounding his assassination in Kenya on October 23, 2022. We are concerned about freedom of media, speech, and expression in Pakistan, and we believe that the international community has a role to play in promoting these values.

The Pakistani government has already constituted a fact-finding team to investigate the assassination, but it has faced limited resources and minimal cooperation from the Kenyan government. The team has determined that Mr. Sharif's murder was a planned, targeted assassination that involved transnational actors. They have also contested the Kenyan police's version of events, which claimed that Mr. Sharif's killing was a case of mistaken identity.

The fact-finding team has noted several discrepancies in the Kenyan police's account of events, including the trajectory of the bullet that killed Mr. Sharif, the absence of damage to the driver's side of the vehicle, and the lack of a bullet penetration mark on Mr. Sharif's seat. The team has also raised doubts about the conduct of Khurram Ahmed, the driver of the ill-fated Land Cruiser, and his links to government officials in Pakistan.

We call on the international community and the United Nations to support efforts to hold those responsible for Mr. Sharif's assassination accountable. We urge you to press the Kenyan government to cooperate fully with the Pakistani authorities and to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the matter. We also call on you to use your influence to ensure that those responsible for this heinous crime are brought to justice. We must stand together to defend the freedom of the press and to protect journalists from violence and intimidation.
