The viral #HometoBilo campaign that captured the hearts of Australians across the country, and returned a family safely to Biloela

In 2018, Priya, Nades, and their two young daughters were taken from their home in Biloela, Queensland and placed in immigration detention. Despite being beloved members of their local community, the family faced deportation under Australia's asylum policies. Heartbroken but determined, the people of Biloela launched a campaign that would captivate the nation.

Australians of all beliefs and backgrounds have come together for this family in a way I never imagined when I started this petition

Angela Fredericks, petition starter

Angela Fredericks started a petition on Change.org calling on then-Prime Minister Scott Morrison to "Bring Priya Back to Biloela." What began as a local show of support grew into a powerful national movement, gathering almost 600,000 signatures and sparking years of public rallies, media coverage, and political pressure.

Through every court hearing, transfer, and setback — including a long stay in detention on Christmas Island — the Biloela community never gave up. And finally, in June 2022, the Nadesalingam family was granted permanent visas and returned home to a hero's welcome.

Tears flowed. Signs read "Welcome Home."

This is people power — and the love of a small town that never stopped fighting.
