Please visit our website and read the page labeled 2011 for the story on why I am petitioning to have these things changed.
This is what I am petitioning to have changed:
(Please sign if you see at least one thing you would like changed.)
1. I want the law regarding bond amount to be reviewed and changed regarding youth non-violent drug offenses and any other non-violent offenses committed that the state sees other opportunities for character correction other than incarcerating them with violent offenders and teaching them violent ways. A lot of todays problems could be corrected if the methods of correction were right.
2. Provisions applied to the law to allow all charges before the age of 25 be eligible for waiver to enroll in the military.
3. Any non-violent probationers should be eligible to enroll in the military and upon enrollment the probation should be suspended/terminated as long as the defendant remains in the military for the duration of the probation sentence. If they do, probation and all charges should be dropped. If defendant receives a honorable discharge then probation should be left terminated.
4. The legal age to smoke and drink is 21. That means the government already agrees that you’re not an adult until your 21 so the laws in the country regarding age and the juvenile record should be provisioned to say that any juvenile under the age of 21 criminal record should be sealed and remain confidential due to being under the age of 21 and not considered an adult.
5. Anyone under the age of 21 should not be incarcerated in an adult facility. Separate holding should be required and left to the first appearance judge that should have a set protocol regarding the offense and the age of the defendant. A case worker should be assigned on a case-by-case basis.
6. Anyone under the age of 21 charged with a non-violent crime should be released to their parent or guardian regardless of bond amount set.
7. All defendants under the age of 21 should have a case worker and/or civil rights worker assigned to identify potential rights violations and to help identify problems in the minor’s life that has led up to the reason they are in legal trouble and use the necessary resources to correct the root of the problem. The government will never see change if they don’t get to the root of the problem in that child’s life to try to help them.
8. The number of cases a public defender has should be limited. A lot of charges the public defenders are defending are very minor offenses and shouldn’t be in court to begin with. If the majority of minor misdemeanor offenses were settled a different way, it would free up a lot time for the court system and the attorneys.
9. Drug rehabilitation for defendants under the age of 21 should be paid for by the state the defendant was charged in.
10. All defendants under the age of 21 should be required to speak with a mental health therapist before being placed in any kind of confinement and periodically while under the supervision of the county or state.
11. Mental health care and medication should be free of charge to anyone who needs it regardless of income. A lot of people just don’t get help because the price of healthcare is so expensive even with the pharmaceutical companies making billions. Even if some people "technically” could afford it according to the government, I get it, no you can’t.
12. I want the laws regarding the statute of limitations to be changed regarding children’s civil claims. There should be no statute of limitations in matters like these. Reason due to the scientifically proven fact that human’s brains develop at different times depending on a lot of different factors. At the time I did not know how wrong this was and how much damage it would cause in my life. How could I have done anything about it? I was 17 with a 9th grade education in a homeless shelter. I didn’t know how to do these types of things then.
13. There should be no statute of limitations on civil claims against any county, state, or federal government. Maybe the victim was just too scared to stand up for what they believed in at the time.
14. I want Georgia to update and revise a less harsh sentencing guide similar to the structure of North Carolina's sentencing guide. All states in the United States should have structured sentencing to avoid harsh punishment for youth and first time offenders.
15. I want Georgia to review any cases that may have violated a child’s civil rights by the child not having the appropriate education, age, and/or mental health competence to fully understand what was going on at the time of sentencing. I can name quite a few in the state of GA.
16. I want the military to offer GED and/or high school equivalency degrees while you are enrolled in boot camp/basic training to give everyone an equal chance to be able to join.
17. I want the punishment for non-violent drug offenses to be revised to form a solution to help the problem instead of causing more in the state of Georgia. This is going back to the structured sentencing, but I want to point an emphasis on how cruel the drug laws are for people who only have a drug problem and nothing more. I wasn’t hurting anyone but myself. They hurt me more than I could ever hurt myself. One-hundred percent true statement.
18. Everyone in the United States of America should have the right to have a firearm due to safety concerns. You can't tell someone they can't protect themselves, especially when we live in the world we live in today.
19. The second amendment protects everyone's gun rights. Every person in america above the age of 21 should be eligible to own a firearm for their own protection and hunting needs. In times like these, everyone should have the right to have protection to defend themselves, even being a felon. If they have never been convicted of a violent crime dealing with a firearm, there should be no reason they should not be able to own a firearm for hunting or protection.
