The Issue

My son is completely scared of using school bathrooms because others can see him due to the gaps in the stalls. No child should ever feel anxious or embarrassed to attend to natural needs in their school environment. Yet, many students throughout the country face this very issue daily, enduring discomfort and distress because their privacy is compromised.

Across numerous schools, restroom stalls are designed with significant gaps between doors and frames or with low partitions that make it easy for others to see inside. This lack of privacy not only invades personal space but also contributes to bullying, anxiety, and shame for students who are simply trying to relieve themselves.

Privacy is a fundamental right, and when it's denied in such personal spaces as restrooms, it can vastly impact a student's sense of security and well-being. Inadequate restroom privacy can discourage students from using the bathroom when they need to, potentially leading to health issues or increased absenteeism as a result of avoiding potentially unpleasant or humiliating scenarios.

It's time for a standardized approach to bathroom stall design in schools. We urge school districts and education departments nationwide to revise policies and allocate funding to ensure all restroom facilities provide adequate privacy. This can include installing higher stall doors, eliminating unnecessary gaps, and creating a safer, more welcoming environment for all students.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for the well-being and dignity of all students. Every child deserves the right to privacy and comfort in their school. Join us in calling on policymakers to make necessary changes to protect student privacy in school bathrooms. Sign the petition to support a nationwide initiative for change.
