The Prime Minister, Bangladesh: Release the four arrested bloggers
The Issue
Government of Bangladesh arrested four atheist bloggers. They are accused of defaming Muslim religion and hurting the sentiments of religious people. Some of the links of the news posts are given below:
7. 3 Atheist Bloggers arrested from Dhaka
9. Three Bangladeshi bloggers arrested due to insulting Islam & Prophet
11. Bloggers in Bangladesh protest over arrest of writers
12. Bangladesh Arrests 'Atheist Bloggers,' Cracking Down On Critics
13. Bloggers arrested unlawfully in Bangladesh
14. Appeasing the Islamists – a Distressing Sign for Bangladesh
We urge Government of Bangladesh to work towards building a secular nation and show respect for freedom of expression. In this connection we request Government of Bangladesh to release the arrested bloggers and show courage to respect people's rational views.
Today freedom of speech, or the freedom of expression, is recognized in international and regional human rights law. The right is enshrined in Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, Article 13 of the American Convention on Human Rights and Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.
