Preamble:

 

Sanskar Kendra was designed by Le Corbusier, one of the greatest architects of twentieth century, as the city museum of Ahmedabad in 1954. Originally called "The Museum of Knowledge", the building was a part of a larger Cultural Centre and envisaged to project the rich history, art, culture and architecture of the city. Since then, Sanskar Kendra has been of immense significance as one of the first Modernist buildings of India. 

Unfortunately, a new two-storey structure is being built by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation at the front of Sanskar Kendra near the entrance gate. This will mar the value of the iconic building and the public space it marks. It is quite possible to fulfill the practical needs for which the new building is being built, by locating it at another, more appropriate location. However, earnest consistent suggestions to this effect have been disregarded by the authorities under one pretext or another.

Sanskar Kendra is of as much significance as the Religious Monuments, Pol Houses and the Textile Crafts that the heritage of Ahmedabad is identified with. We request everyone to come forward to help us restore the sanctity of Sanskar Kendra as a prime public space. 

 

 

Petition:

 

We appeal to the Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner to take immediate and urgent action to stop further work on the new structure in the vicinity of Sanskar Kendra in order to save this Public Space for the citizens and future generations, and in order to save this important building from disfigurement.
