Relocate the Adelaide Skate Park! #Sk8Relocate

The issue

The State Labor Government terminated the Adelaide Skate Park’s lease in June last year, knowing that you planned to build right over the top of it after June 2014. Now we've gained a reprieve as the City Council has negotiated an extension of the lease until February 2015, after which Adelaide’s skaters will lose this popular North Terrace space forever to the new Riverbank redevelopment and the expansion of the biomedical precinct.

We understand that health is important, but so is a space for young people to recreate and congregate - in fact that is one of the healthiest things young people can do!

Skaters, riders and young people deserve to have a space that is well designed and suited to their needs.

We are wondering why it has taken a Government that says it wants a vibrant city so long to get its own skates on and secure the future of an Adelaide skate park?

When they start to build on top of the location of the current Skate Park next February just where are Adelaide’s skaters going to go?

If the city doesn’t have a skate park then unsurprisingly the whole city becomes a skate park, but will it be as safe a space and will it really be a vibrant city without a designated skate space? Will it lead to unnecessary conflict between skaters and others in the community?

We need a Skate Park that is created and designed in consultation with skaters, for skaters, accessible 24/7 and in a safe, visible place.

It also needs all the mod cons such as water, shelter and shade, seating and toilets for skaters and spectators.

Please sign and share so we can skate safely!
