Petitioning The British Council

This Is Africa community is calling on the British Council to stop conducting English proficiency exams for Africans from common wealth countries and those who were not only instructed in English throughout their education but also utilise it as the official language in their countries. We have for some time agitated on social media for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) to be discontinued for their exploitation of Africans from former colonies. This is a British Council consideration as it is tasked with fostering cultural relations and educational opportunities. The latter extends to developing a wider knowledge of the English language which it believes transforms lives. It states, “Good English teaching helps people to study and work and to develop careers, confidence and networks.” However it is not lost on the African populace that the UK English teaching sector for international opportunities adds approximately £3 billion to the UK economy annually. The British Council’s partnership with UK exam boards generates almost £100 million per annum for UK exam boards. In the two years alone (2018-19) the British Council expects to provide exams for approx. four million candidates. According to the British Council, “English teaching and exams are part of the British Council that generate surplus- the organisation’s genuinely unrestricted financial resources.” About 85 per cent of the British Council’s turnover is earned through teaching and exams, tendered contracts and partnerships, the organisation stated. In 2015-16, the British Council earned a total income of £980 million. Its English exams accounted for 58 per cent of its income of £568 million. Consequently in its 2016-17 financial review, the British Council achieved almost 10 per cent growth with income from exams growing by 20.2 per cent; represented 60 per cent of its income of £650.1 million. Then in its 2017-18 financial review, the British Council achieved a 9.0 per cent growth in its total income “principally due to strong performance from its English teaching and examinations, which attributed to 41 per cent of its £486.9 million income. It is against the above that we’re calling for the end of English proficiency exams as the British Council has proven that these exams are a huge source of revenue. Unfortunately, these exams are a means of extorting Africans who seek to study abroad. English is an official language in all countries colonised by Britain. It is also the medium of teaching in schools from primary to university level. To further subject graduates to a $200 IELTS exams that expires every two years is highly condemnable. It is furthermore a humiliation of Africans still affected by colonialism in their relegation of indigenous languages for the pursuit of English proficiency. The tyranny of the English language may continue, but we should not pay to partake in that tyranny. Is the British Council unaware that graduates in English speaking countries are taught in English? Have to take English as a general course? This feigned ignorance is intolerable. We hereby ask that all who believe in the power of change and are interested in ending this exploitation to sign this petition and share widely.  Follow @travelbrothers_ and @ThisIsAfricaTIA to follow up on the petition.

Free Ahed Tamimi

My name is Nasri Akil from Toronto, Canada. I started this campaign to support" Ahed Tamimi", her mother "Mariam", her cousin "Nur" and the other kids detained by the evil hands of the Zionists of the fake state of Israel. In a desperate hope to get enough signature to put pressure on decision makers to do something about the constant twisted detention of Palestinian kids. In turn this will expose the evil of the zionists and pressure the international community. I would like to mention here that this petition has nothing to do with race or religion or ethnicity. It's pure right against wrong. Zionism is not Judaism. Judaism is a religion not a race. Many Jews are not Zionists. Most Zionists are not Jews. Many Zionists hate Jews. Opposition to Israel is NOT anti-Semitism. Ahed Tamimi, 16, was arrested ( kidnapped actually ) by Israeli forces in the middle of the night. Since she was a young child, she has been active in weekly demonstrations against Israel’s theft of her family’s land in occupied Nabi Saleh. But as Tamimi stands against Israeli occupation, she underscores: whenever a people face oppression, we must show solidarity. Israeli soldiers shot Ahed Tamimi's relative in the head, leaving the teenage boy in a coma, and then invaded her family home. She demanded that the occupying Israeli soldiers leave her property immediately, shouting "don't touch me" and "leave!" Now she's in Israeli military detention, where 75% of Palestinian children report assault. Ahed is a child, and like thousands of Palestinian children she could be humiliated and abused if we don't get her out fast. She has become another child statistic of the countless other children detained illegally in Israel. Her court date is December 25th, 2017. She was taken into question at the Moscobiyeh prison, notorious for it's dungeon cell, torture tactics fully utilized on children, and extensive harassment. She was put in isolation, left in an icy cell, without proper food. In fives days she was moved three times. Why? To exhaust and break her.  When her mother arrived to be there with her, she too was arrested.  We demand that Ahed and all Palestinian children are released from Israeli prisons now.  The international community must put an end to the ill-treatment and detention of Palestinian children. Enough is enough.  Ahed Tamimi represent all the innocent kids in the Isareli detention and represent the Palestinians struggle against the illegal occupation of Palestine. Since 1967, Palestinian children in the Occupied Palestinian Territory have been living under Israeli military law and prosecuted in military courts. Israeli military law, which fails to ensure and denies basic and fundamental rights, is applied to the whole Palestinian population. Israel is the only country in the world that automatically prosecutes children in military courts that lack basic and fundamental fair trial guarantees. Since 2000, at least 8,000 Palestinian children have been arrested and prosecuted in an Israeli military detention system notorious for the systematic ill-treatment and torture of Palestinian children. Around 500-700 Palestinian children are arrested, detained and prosecuted in the Israeli military court system each year. The majority of Palestinian child detainees are charged with throwing stones, and three out of four experience physical violence during arrest, transfer or interrogation. Unlike Israeli children living in illegal settlements in the West Bank, Palestinian children are not accompanied by a parent and are generally interrogated without the benefit of legal advice, or being informed of their right. They are overwhelmingly accused of throwing stones, an offense that can lead to a potential maximum sentence of 10 to 20 years depending on a child’s age. AHED TAMIMI will go to trial on Christmas Day for slapping an Israeli soldier, illegally trespassing on her property, the day after her 15-year-old cousin was shot in the face. In December 2011, Mustafa Tamimi was killed during a protest in the village when an Israeli soldier shot him in the face with a tear gas canister. One year later, Israeli soldiers shot and killed Rashadi Tamimi in the village. One wonders why the "slap" is the Crime? I decided to do something about it and start with what I can. So that's why I am here asking you to help me help Ahed, her family and all the other kids. I also started a fund raising campaign on "GoFundMe" hoping to raise enough money to hire as many legal advisors to support Ahed and the others legaly in the court and get some justice. I mean enough is enough...I can't sleep I can't eat and these kids are experiencing all of that twist. Someone must do something. This is not right. This is not humanity. We cannot make this acceptable by doing nothing.  I earnestly ask that at the very least, we make some noise in support of Ahed Tamimi and the other children that are held prisoners with no charge, no defense, all in violation of international laws.   She is one, but we are many. It takes a united front to add pressure, to induce accountability and hopefully give freedom to the oppressed, weak and innocent.  To Ahed and all the children in Israeli jails: We stand by your side, and are holding you in our hearts. We will not give up until you are free. You are not alone. As a wise man ounce said: "Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible" Sign. Support. Make Noise. Add Pressure. Be Human.  what if Ahed was your daughter, sister or just a friend? What would you do?

China: Release the 1 Million Uyghurs Detained in Nazi-Style Concentration Camps

China: Release The 1 Million Uyghur Detainees Held Illegally In Nazi-Style Concentration Camps   By  Torchlight Uyghur Group  ( This Petition Is Also Available In The Following Languages: Turkish (Turkçe), German (Deutsch), Japanese (日本語),  Chinese (中文), Traditional Chinese (繁体字), French (Français), Arabic (عربى), Uyghur (ئۇيغۇرچە), Slawyan (Kiril), Russian(Pусский) January 20th, 2018        Many media organizations around the world have recently reported that a large portion of the Uyghur population is being detained either in jails or in so-called “re-education camps” ( while their children are being kept in countless orphanages in the East Turkestan.   Recently, we have learned from official sources inside East Turkestan that the number of the Uyghurs currently being held in these Nazi-style political “re-education” concentration camps is more than 800,000.  That is a number known officially inside East Turkestan, but all the unofficial numbers we obtained from various sources exceed one million. According to the 2010 Chinese census, the Uyghur population in East Turkestan was 10,000,370 ( This means that about 10% of the current Uyghur population is locked up.  The conditions of the concentration camps are horrific because of the fact that such a large number of Uyghurs are locked up in relatively small and crowded spaces. We were told by several people who fled China recently that people even cannot lie down during the night with their backs on the floor; instead, they have to sleep sideways with all the adjacent bodies touching one another. We have also learned from some Uyghurs who recently lost their close relatives in the concentration camps that a significant number of Uyghurs are losing their lives in those camps every day. The families of the victims are just receiving their dead bodies from those overcrowded concentration camps. The local authorities are not giving back the bodies of the younger Uyghurs died, instead, just burying them in the nearby empty fields. These are just a few of the many examples of the horrible conditions in these concentration camps.   How did those more than one million people end up in jails, concentration camps and orphanages?  It is extremely difficult to obtain such information in China, but we have managed to get information on some individual cases from the relatives of those victims’ living outside China (The report titled “Political persecution of the Uyghurs – Brief description of some individual cases” at The Uyghurs are one of the ancient peoples living in the heart of Asia. They have a long and proud history, and a rich culture. Throughout the history, the Uyghurs have been a great contributor to the world peace and prosperity.  Due  to their geographical location along the famous Silk Road, they have been a major force in the cultural exchange between the East and the West. We strongly believe that the Uyghurs are an indispensable part of the wider international community and will continue such contribution to the world’s ethnic and cultural diversities in the future. Similarly, the Uyghurs will contribute to the world's peace and prosperity, just as they have done in the past. Therefore, the Uyghurs have every right to live in peace with dignity, and to continuously prosper, as any other nations on the surface of our mother Earth. However, in the recent decades, the Chinese government has banned the Uyghur language from its use at all levels of education in East Turkestan, outlawed Uyghur literature (by banning and burning historical and literature books written in the Uyghur language), restricted, criminalized and attempted to eliminate Uyghurs’ religious belief and practice, and has systematically flooded East Turkestan with Han Chinese migrants in the name of “developing the West”, and thereby marginalized the Uyghurs in their own homeland.  And now the Chinese government is openly killing the Uyghur people, too, in those Nazi-style Chinese concentration camps by implementing a state-sponsored ethnic cleansing policy.  If we don’t get help immediately from the United Nations and from the international community to stop the Chinese government from what they are doing towards the Uyghurs in East Turkestan, the Uyghurs will keep dying and disappearing in large numbers in those Chinese concentration camps ( and will soon face an unprecedented threat to their very existence. Therefore, we appeal to all the international communities and human rights organizations not to ignore the Chinese government’s crimes against humanity – the crimes currently being committed against the innocent Uyghur people.  We appeal to the United Nations and other international human rights organizations to demand the Chinese government to release those  1 million Uyghurs, and send investigation teams to East Turkestan and find out: ●      Where are those jails, concentration camps and orphanages? ●      Why and where those one million Uyghurs are being detained? ●      What are they eating and where and how are they sleeping? ●      What are they doing during the day? ●      What are their current health conditions? ●      What are the current death rates among the detainees? ●      What is happening to the children/siblings/parents of the people held in jails and concentration camps?  We, the Uyghurs, are powerless and helpless at the moment.  As such, we cannot defend ourselves against the Chinese government’s atrocities and cannot fight this battle for our survival alone.  We need the support of the global community.  If tens of thousands of people from around the world sign our petition, it may be possible that the United Nations will make a commitment and will act to stop the tragedy that the Uyghur people are facing today.  Please join us in our fight to end the appalling atrocities happening in East Turkestan. Please sign and share this petition. Thank you!  About the Uyghur People and East Turkestan:  East Turkestan is the homeland of the Uyghur people. It has been under the communist China' s occupation since 1949. East Turkestan is located in the Central Asia, and borders China and Mongolia to the east, Russia to the north, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India to the west, and Tibet to the south. The landmass of East Turkestan is bigger than whole Western Europe. Its colonial name is “Xinjiang”, which means "the new territory" or "the new frontier" in Chinese. China officially designated the East Turkestan a Uyghur autonomous region in 1955, but in reality it has never become a genuine autonomous region. The Chinese government reported the number of the Uyghur population in East Turkestan as 10,000,370 (refer to the 2010 Chinese census), but some Uyghur sources estimate the real population of Uyghurs to be around 20 million.

IMPORTANT! A 25 year old Saudi Arabian woman in Riyadh is trapped in a household which promotes a rape culture and abuse through various beatings, threats, violence, as well as depriving her from basic needs such as food, water and medical care. I write this on behalf of her as this is a serious matter that needs immediate attention. I and many private individuals have contacted organisations such as UN women, Amnesty international, Human Rights Watch, Un Refugee etc only for them to ignore our cry for help or they would tell us that they do not deal with "individual cases". The young lady contacted local authorities and shelters for help but they would blame her instead for the abuse or they would turn a blind eye towards her case. This was proven from a variety of emails and proofs of which she provided us with in the hopes that it will spark attention. We call upon each and every individual to be a voice, in order for her to be placed in a safe environment after her endured trauma! She is also willing to testify on behalf of many other women who are trapped in her predicament in the hopes that Officials need to start taking lives seriously! I am desperate for this petition to reach as many people as possible because the young lady is looking through other means such as suicide. Who can blame her? It is obvious that she is mentally incapable and hence I redeem this matter as being serious. I have not provided her full name so that I can protect her identity from any further dangers especially from governmental entities and/or her oppressors. It is seen as a "shame" for a victim of the Saudi state to seek international help from outside their borders. That to me is absurd considering the fact that the victim and those who are oppressed wouldnt need to seek international help in the first place if their OWN state authorities and organisations didnt turn them away!  To the humanitarian organisational entities, we call upon you to act according to the promises that you preach on a daily basis! We cannot as a society allow you to weaken the voices of the vulnerable when they CALL OUT FOR YOU!  Furthermore, the whole purpose as to why your entites exist in the first place is to deal with violations that are a threat to human life! If you, yourselves do not follow your own mission and vision statements that you are willingly proud to boast about in public view, you are as bad as the individuals who find the need to cause unrest in society! The abuse of Saudi Arabian Women has been an ongoing issue that never ends. It is an atrocity that shouldn't even be considered a norm. Convenants and policies do nothing for these women as they are still being abused and mistreated in the most horrendous ways. A Saudi Arabian woman must not be killed or placed in a dention centre just because she knows her worth! The Saudi Arabian state must be held accountable for upholding a culture of abuse in its society!  Death should not be, by any means a way of escape for a woman who is oppressed! Stop turning a blind eye to a human rights violation that is killing many.  One Womans death equates to a fallen generation! Women are more than their beauty and their strength, They hold the world in the palm of their hands, therefore we need to rise to the occassion. Saudi Arabian women deserve their freedom. We talk about their freedom, we fantasize about it, we write articles about it and we even create mediocre policies for it but we never ACT on the freedom we so actively preach about it! ACT! ACT! ACT! GOALS 1. The Saudi Arabian Victim must be set free without any arrests. Furthermore, her oppressors must be dealt with legally for the crimes committed. She must be given the necessary treatment for the trauma and she must be able to have a say when it comes to her personal concerns. 2. Provide Saudi Arabian women of ALL ages places of safety ENSURING that they will not get turned back by organisational entities, ensuring that medical provisions are being made, ensuring that their perpetrators deal with the law immediately and effectively and ensuring that places of safety are checked on a constant bases for safety precautions. Any organisation that fails to account for the above, must face legal precautions. 3. Police Enforcement must be held accountable for not taking matters of abused women seriously. Women must NOT be forced back to their oppressors neither should they be arrested for reporting a crime that is considered urgent and pertaining a crisis that has the potential cause death. We ask that the Police enforcement must be held accountable for their actions if found to do so and this can only be achieved if investigations are conducted by the state and international organisations who have ties with such entities.    #StopEnslavingSaudiWomen   For more info please contact me on the following: Email: Ask for it. Rebuild And Reopen The American Adventure Theme Park

The American Adventure Theme Park has been closed and derelict for 11 years. The American Adventure was my and quite possibly a lot of peoples childhood. The American Adventure Theme Park was home to the boomerang coaster called The missile (located in Pleasurewood hills, Lowestoft, Norfolk and is now under the name of wipeout) and Twin looper also a rollercoaster(Located in a Polish Theme Park and has been renamed Tic Tac Tornado) Nightmare Niagara was the best log flume in the UK at one time but it got demolished in 2000s, The buffalo ride which was a junior coaster is now at Twin lakes. so many other rides went in the 2000s due to lack of visitors and not enough money, which then saw American Adventure Close in October 2006 and announced that it would not open for the 2007 season. The American Adventure Theme Park opened in June 1987 and Completely closed in January 2007. Waystone have purchased the site and they have been given the green light to build more than 300 homes, a retirement village, hotels, pubs, restaurant, and other stuff. Me and my friend have come up with a new design and plan to for he return of The American Adventure Theme Park with modern roller coasters and attractions. So sign this petition and let's see if we can get The American Adventure Theme Park Back open for business with brand new attractions and coasters. The sooner you sign, the better chance we have of getting American Adventure back. If American Adventure reopens it will attract so many visitors and it will be a huge boost to the community and for the UK not just Derbyshire. New Attractions Could be built as well as New coasters, food outlets, gift shops, pubs etc. American Adventure Could include A dark ride with a tour of how American Adventure first looked like when it opened. This would be a huge boost! The petition is stopping on til May 2018. I would love it if the council actually brought this back, because there is no other theme park in Derbyshire only Gulliver's kingdom Let's find the right investors for the return of The American Adventure Theme park. Let's stop this hideous plan to build houses! Let's all do a protest. Add me on Facebook and Twitter for more information

Helping Syrian youths inside Syria pursue their dreams of study abroad.

This is the story of Damascus resident Shaza, who graduated from university and set out to conquer the world and make a change in her life and others’. She received a conditional university scholarship offer this year from a prestigious university abroad. However, when Shaza knew that she needed to go to Lebanon to sit for her IELTS test to meet the language requirement of the university, her chest tightened with worry that she might not be able to continue her studies. After a nerve-racking, week-long search for a way to sit her IELTS test, she found out that she could neither afford travelling to Lebanon nor could she travel alone since she had no one to accompany her there. She was totally devastated. It was a life-long dream that was crushed in a few seconds. "I was just crying all the time," she said. "After years of hard work and studying 12 hours every day, from 6 am to 6 pm, I simply couldn't pursue my dream just because I couldn't travel to Lebanon. What could I do?"  Shaza's family feared that their daughter was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. They helped her gather her courage and supported her emotionally, but they couldn't manage to secure enough money for her to travel to Lebanon to sit for the IELTS. This is not only the story of Shaza; it's the sad story of thousands of Syrian and Palestinian students in Syria who need to travel to neighboring Lebanon to sit the IELTS. What everyone should know is the distressing details of getting this mission accomplished. First: When trying to book an IELTS test, one is faced with fact that there is no electronic payment method in Syria. Therefore, somebody must be present in Lebanon on their behalf to pay the fees of the test within a maximum period of 3 days from the date of booking or face cancellation.  There are some centers in Syria that will assist in the booking process, but they charge about $60--a large amount of money in Syria, especially when it is added to the $200 already paid in test fees. Second: Entry into Lebanon is such a leap of faith journey. Transportation costs to Lebanon amount to about $100, not to mention the waiting period at the Lebanese border is 8-10 hours. One more hindrance is that many test candidates are government employees who must have a visa to leave Syria; this adds a lot of mental pressure, time, and money due to the task of acquiring the visa. Third: To enter Lebanon, one needs to submit a proof of hotel booking. The student has to book a hotel for two days at a cost of approximately $110 and must further provide a cash fund of no less than $1000 to be allowed to cross the borders. Fourth: After the students have made it to Lebanon, they will need at least $100 to cover transportation fees and food costs (estimated at about $50 each). It gets worse; there is an additional difficulty faced by female students-- that of travelling alone while fearing many unforeseen obstacles along the way. As a result of being nervous and fatigued before entering the exam due to travel difficulties and procedures, test candidates' true language proficiency level can't be measured nor will the results accurately reflect their true level of English. These added stressors might naturally result in the students getting less than the required exam score causing the students to have to undergo the whole nightmare again. We are aware of the complications due to the Syrian crisis and know that because of these political, military, and logistical complications, the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge English Language Assessment can't operate in Syria at the moment, but we wholeheartedly urge all stakeholders to find basic, feasible solutions to this ongoing dilemma. Being fully knowledgeable of the complications, we are sure that the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge English Language Assessment have the willingness and tools to come up with innovative ideas that can put an end to this issue. As you’re working towards a solution, keep in mind that it’s not only about helping Syrian youth; it's quite possibly about giving the world a chance to welcome the next Steve Jobs whose biological father was, after all, a Syrian immigrant Give Syrians a chance. Give the world a chance.

We are humbly calling for the cancellation of Kano Re-run election .

We the good people of Kano state, Nigeria, we are concerned about reports emanating from the Kano State supplementary elections that indicate serious violence, extensive use of thugs to perpetrate electoral violence.   We condemns the actions of political parties in the run-up to the supplementary elections and on Election Day. Reports received show massive deployment of thugs and party agents to polling units. In Gama Ward, a large number of thugs were seen intimidating voters, observers and even INEC officials around the polling units, unchecked, despite the presence of security personnel.   There were also incidents of high deployment of unaccredited party agents to polling units who aided the disruption of the voting process. Situation Room is concerned that abuses of electoral process and violence have occurred despite the deployment of top-level Police officials, including a Deputy Inspector General, three Assistant Inspectors-General and Commissioners of Police.   There were also incidents of high deployment of unaccredited party agents to polling units who aided the disruption of the voting process. we is concerned that abuses of electoral process and violence have occurred despite the deployment of top-level Police officials, including a Deputy Inspector General, three Assistant Inspectors-General and Commissioners of Police.   In the previous elections, the State Commissioner of Police took charge without senior-level officers. It is therefore ironic and curious that this level of violence and political thuggery would occur with this quantum of senior Police Officers deployed. Situation Room has always advocated against redeployment of Commissioners of Police ahead of elections.   Reports also showed that there were high incidences of vote buying facilitated by thugs and party agents. This trend was seen particularly in Gama Ward of Nasarawa Local Government. There were also reported cases of attempted inducement of observers with cash.”   The Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room has expressed concern over widespread irregularities, especially violence in the Kano State supplementary election held on Saturday.   The organization, therefore, called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to “discountenance the supplementary elections where violence occurred and proceed to make a declaration on the basis of the polls already concluded.” but still INEC refuses to listen by declaring the incumbent governor as the winner of the Kano state 2019 gubernatorial election.   We are humbly appealing in your good office to intervene or to investigate and force the responsible body to cancel and call for another free and fair supplementary election.   God bless you and more power!   Respectfully yours, People of Kano State.

Pay students the Erasmus grant promised, immediately

Dear Petitioner, We wanted to write to apologise for the inconvenience, disruption and stress that the delays to the Erasmus grant payment must have caused you. The delays to the payments have been caused by problems beyond our control with the introduction of the EU’s new Erasmus+ programme, and the British Council is very aware of the consequent problems that you may have experienced. We, working in partnership with Ecorys as the Erasmus+ UK National Agency, have shared your frustration that we have not been able to process payments to your universities faster. We are sorry that you felt that you had to petition us to try to get answers – the normal process for students is to liaise with their universities for information, not the British Council directly. This is mainly because the universities decide how and when to give the grant payments to the students and know how many of their students are on study or work placements at any given time. This was also because different universities were at different stages of the payment process, depending on the progress with the paperwork needed. We are pleased to say that over 90% of universities have now received their grant funding from us. We have been posting updates on the Erasmus+ website with the latest news on the funding of universities, and explaining in more detail the reasons behind the delay. We are continuing to pay the universities awaiting their funding as quickly as we can and we expect the payment process will be much smoother next year for everyone. We hugely value your participation in the Erasmus programme, and we hope that your time spent on the programme this academic year will be enjoyable and valuable to you too. Kind regards, The Erasmus+ team.
