Pay students the Erasmus grant promised, immediately

Le problème

The Erasmus grant we have been promised stands at 2358.40 euros, which corresponds to 400 euros per 30 granted days. As that stands the grant only covers 177 days of our mobility period; many of us are abroad for nine months, which is approximately 272 days. UCL has recently described this as a fund 'to offset only the additional expenses that you occur while you are abroad.' However, 400 euros per month is more money than the majority of students would get as a maintenance loan from The Students Loan company. Thus many students have budgeted with the grant in mind and rely on this money, yet UCL still has not confirmed a payment date for the grant.

The British Council
Dear Petitioner, We wanted to write to apologise for the inconvenience, disruption and stress that the delays to the Erasmus grant payment must have caused you. The delays to the payments have been caused by problems beyond our control with the introduction of the EU’s new Erasmus+ programme, and the British Council is very aware of the consequent problems that you may have experienced. We, working in partnership with Ecorys as the Erasmus+ UK National Agency, have shared your frustration that we have not been able to process payments to your universities faster. We are sorry that you felt that you had to petition us to try to get answers – the normal process for students is to liaise with their universities for information, not the British Council directly. This is mainly because the universities decide how and when to give the grant payments to the students and know how many of their students are on study or work placements at any given time. This was also because different universities were at different stages of the payment process, depending on the progress with the paperwork needed. We are pleased to say that over 90% of universities have now received their grant funding from us. We have been posting updates on the Erasmus+ website https://www.erasmusplus.org.uk/news/update-to-university-students-awaiting-funding with the latest news on the funding of universities, and explaining in more detail the reasons behind the delay. We are continuing to pay the universities awaiting their funding as quickly as we can and we expect the payment process will be much smoother next year for everyone. We hugely value your participation in the Erasmus programme, and we hope that your time spent on the programme this academic year will be enjoyable and valuable to you too. Kind regards, The Erasmus+ team.
