Stephen Ira Cohen is an American attorney and politician who has served as the U.S. Representative for Tennessee's 9th congressional district since 2007. As a member of the Democratic Party, his district covers the western three-fourths of Memphis. Notably, Cohen is Tennessee's first Jewish congressman. He has an extensive political career, having been a member of the Tennessee State Senate from 1982 to 2006, and has held various roles including vice president of the Tennessee Constitutional Convention and Shelby County Commissioner. Cohen earned his Bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt University and a law degree from the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at the University of Memphis. His legal expertise includes serving as a legal advisor for the Memphis Police Department.
