Robert A. Rivas is an American politician currently serving as the 71st Speaker of the California State Assembly. A member of the California Democratic Party, he represents the 29th Assembly District, which includes the Pajaro and Salinas valleys of the Central Coast. Rivas was first elected to the State Assembly in November 2018, defeating Republican Neil G. Kitchens. Before his tenure in the State Assembly, he served on the San Benito County Board of Supervisors. His educational background includes a Bachelor's degree in Government from California State University, Sacramento, and a Master's degree in Public Administration from San Jose State University. Rivas has held various roles, including Field Director and Senior Field Representative in the California State Assembly and Adjunct Professor at Gavilan College.
