Michael Whaley is currently a politician serving as a member of the Shelby County Board of Commissioners, representing District 13, which includes East Memphis and Midtown. He was first elected in August 2018 and was re-elected for a second term in August 2022. As of September 1, 2024, he was elected as the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners.Before his political career, Whaley had a background in education and nonprofit leadership. He founded and served as the Executive Director of Memphis College Prep, a public elementary school. Additionally, he worked as the Tennessee Director of Leadership for Educational Equity, where he focused on empowering teachers to engage in civic leadership. Whaley began his career in education as a teacher with Memphis City Schools after being part of the Teach for America program. His experiences in education and community service have significantly shaped his approach to governance and public policy.
