Matthew Louis Gaetz II, born in 1982, is an American politician and lawyer known for his tenure as a United States Representative for Florida's 1st congressional district from 2017 to 2024. A member of the Republican Party, Gaetz is a self-described libertarian populist and is regarded as a proponent of far-right politics and a staunch ally of Donald Trump. His district encompassed Escambia, Okaloosa, and Santa Rosa counties, along with parts of Walton County. Before serving in Congress, Gaetz was a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 2010 to 2016. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Social Science from Florida State University and a JD from William and Mary University. Gaetz also worked as an attorney at Keefe, Anchors, Gordon & Moyle.
