Mark Nelson is an American ecologist and author based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, renowned for his pioneering work in ecological systems. He gained prominence as one of the eight original crew members of Biosphere 2, a groundbreaking project aimed at exploring closed ecological systems, where he served as the Director of Earth and Space Applications from 1991 to 1994. With a strong focus on ecological engineering, restoration of damaged ecosystems, and wastewater recycling, Nelson has made significant contributions to ecological research. He is the founding director of the Institute of Ecotechnics, established in 1973. Additionally, Nelson has served as Commissioner for District 3 at the Tuscaloosa County Commission, showcasing his commitment to ecological and community development initiatives.
