Hunter Tootoo is a notable Canadian politician who previously served as the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard. His tenure in office stretched from 2015 to 2016. Tootoo, who was born and raised in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, started his political career as a member of the Legislative Assembly of his home territory from 1999 to 2013. Notably, he became the first Inuk to hold a senior cabinet position in the federal government. Alongside his political achievements, Tootoo is also celebrated for his advocacy for the rights and welfare of indigenous communities.
