Gustavo Petro

Gustavo Petro is a prominent Colombian politician and economist known for his left-wing ideologies. Born on April 19, 1960, he initially rose to prominence as a guerrilla member of the M-19 movement before transitioning into formal politics. He served as a senator and was elected as the mayor of Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia, in 2011. However, his term was marred by controversy, leading to his removal from office in 2014. Despite this, Petro maintains a significant political presence in Colombia, notably secured more than 8 million votes in the 2018 presidential elections, which demonstrated the growing acceptance of left-leaning politics in traditionally conservative Colombia.
