Government of Maldives

The Government of Maldives operates under a presidential system, as a democratic republic. It is characterized by a separation of powers among the executive, legislative, and judiciary branches. The President, as the head of government, is directly elected by the people and functions as both the Chief of State and Head of Government. Legislation rests with the unicameral People's Majlis, whose members are also elected by public vote. The judicial system, independent from the executive and legislative powers, is headed by the Supreme Court. The Maldivian government relays a commitment to democratic values, with its constitution ensuring numerous political rights and civil liberties.
