Plastic Polluting our Planet
Hello, everybody. My name is Amanda, and I'm 15 years old. I used to use a plastic straw every single day until I learned some facts about them. In the Los Angeles area alone, ten metric tons of plastic fragments—like grocery bags, straws, and soda bottles—are carried into the Pacific Ocean every day. Over the last ten years, we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the previous century. 50 percent of the plastic we use, we use just once and throw away. Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times. We currently recover only five percent of the plastics we produce. Why is that so bad? Well for starters 46 percent of plastics float (EPA 2006), and it can drift for years before eventually concentrating in the ocean gyres. It takes 500-1,000 years for plastic to degrade. One million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed annually from plastic in our oceans. The body can absorb plastic chemicals—93 percent of Americans age six or older test positive for BPA (a synthetic chemical) Much more information can be found at https://www.ecowatch.com/22-facts-about-plastic-pollution-and-10-things-we-can-do-about-it-1881885971.html http://www.choosetogostrawless.com/ https://thelastplasticstraw.org/about-us/ http://www.plasticpollutioncoalition.org/no-straw-please https://www.banthebottle.net/articles/its-not-just-the-bottle-the-ubiquity-of-the-plastic-straw/ Unfortunately, we can't reverse some of the things we've already done to this beautiful planet. What we can do is make some changes. Anything from asking for no straw, bring a reusable bag, use your own utensils (rather than disposable), buying from farmers markets, use a refillable cup/bottle, to making your staples yourself to avoid plastic can make a world (no pun intended) of difference. What I'm asking today, is that you sign this petition. Not that hard, right? :D I will be sending this request to places like Panera, Starbucks, Safeway, Dunkin Donuts, and more. What I'm asking of them is to use less plastic and styrofoam. To incorporate more recycling cans into their locations. To only give plastic bags to those who ask for them. To use paper straws rather than plastic. To find an alternative to Styrofoam takeout containers. To stop putting things in plastic that doesn't need to be. Have you ever seen the movie Wall-e? It stars a cute little robot who picks up trash. Remember how awful Earth looked? The whole time I was watching that movie I just wanted to go hug a tree (I didn't actually hug a tree). I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad about their choices, I'm just trying to inform! Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope we can work together to make 2018 a much friendlier place (for the people and the planet). <3
First Aid Readiness Act In memory of Lesandro "Junior" Guzman-Feliz and so many others!
On June 20, 2018, Lesandro "Junior" Guzman-Feliz was brutally murdered outside his neighborhood bodega in the Bronx, New York. After the brutal attack, Leasandro can be seen on video in the store, pleading for help, but was told to leave by the staff. This should never happen again! Currently, New York and many other states, do require proof of CPR kits, but that is not enough! All business owners in every industry and building superintendents, should also be mandated to take a basic First Aid Readiness and CPR class. They need to know how to use the kits properly, as the kits are, already a mandated requirement. Under this law, business owners and building superintendents must undergo training every 2 years in order to remain in compliance and maintain their license. While rendering basic aid, will be completely up to the individual; consequences may apply to those who deny it, when there is no immediate threat to one's safety and/or Emergency Response Units have not arrived. Fines and fees will be imposed on all businesses who are out of compliance. A business may also face consequences ranging from fines and fees to the possibility of an immediate shutdown, when there is clear evidence of intentional neglect in helping to preserve human life, in a safe environment. Please be reminded that what happened to Lesandro was beyond tragic and is not representative of the many hardworking and caring business owners in New York City, who would have done something. This law is now important to ensure that one does something or face the consqenuences outlined above.
Five Guys to serve The Impossible Burger or Beyond Meat Burger
I have seen other requests for veggie burgers and vegan options, but people who go to Five Guys want the real burger experience. I think a way that can make everyone happy and still have this experience would be offering the Impossible Burger or the Beyond Meat Burger (and Brats as a vegetarian/vegan hot dog substitute). Many other restaurants and fast food chains are using them as options with great success. Please offer one of these options in the future, I miss Five Guys!
Stop deforestation in Paraguay for animal agriculture
Deforestation in South American countries continues, especially in Paraguay. People are cutting down trees in the Amazon rain forest there, and for what? To make beef. That's right, that juicy cheeseburger that you just bit into may have been made through the deforestation of the Amazon. Farming agencies big and small do this to increase the number of products that they sell, while decreasing the number of trees. And as the number of trees decrease, so does the number of animals. But despite this, the government does noting to stop it. And you, yeah you, can help with the click of a button, to solve a global problem. We can get government agencies such as the EPA to have these companies to stop killing the animals of South America, if we can just get the signatures.
TO ALL FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS - STOP USING PLASTIC STRAWS!
The ocean cannot speak for itself, so we must speak for it. Our oceans have been increasingly devastated from the inhumane and disgusting overuse of plastic straws. Americans alone use over 500 MILLION plastic straws every day, a number that is only supposed to grow with our inexcusable overuse habits. Eventually, it is predicted that there will be MORE microplastics, such as harmful plastic straws, in our oceans than fish. This is incredibly disturbing to both our ocean’s health and our humanity, as ocean ecosystems are crucial food sources and popular recreational areas. Fast Food companies ALONE produce around 200 pounds of waste for every $1000 dollars in sales. This waste includes a majority of plastic straws, about 30 percent of the total waste, which are non-biodegradable.Once in the ocean, plastic is mistaken for food and marine organisms ingest it causing about 71% of seabirds and 30% of sea turtles to have plastic in their stomachs after death. Eating the plastic can cause suffocation, starvation, drowning, and entanglement. If these fast food restaurants reduce their use of plastic straws by half, the amount of waste can be reduced from 60 pounds of plastic straw waste to 30 pounds, reducing the total cost to the restaurant from $1000 dollars to $850 dollars. This can save the fast food companies more money while also decreasing the environmental burden by decreasing the plastic straw pollution, saving more animals in the process. Stop Sucking, Start Saving
The problem is, when you use a plastic item, it could be a plastic lid to the plastic rings around drinks. Even the straws we take for granted. You wouldn't really be like "Oh My, I shouldn't use this!'. You would be like " Oh yeah its fine, its not a problem",this is the problem. Just imagine your a sea turtle swimming in the ocean, then all of the sudden you see something in the water and you eat it. It ends up being plastic, and you are more likely to eat more because you don't know better. Us human we need to stop this, I've heard stories about sea life suffering because of us, and it really effects me. What you don't realize is that in 2050, there will be more plastic in the water then fish. Everyday we are polluting the water and killing marine life. Kids my age don't understand what we are doing wrong in our everyday life. I imagine what if us and the marine life switch roles, what if they are polluting the waters and not doing anything to try to help it. We would be the ones suffering. Most people don't understand what is so wrong with using plastic, until it shows. I hope this inspires you to start using metal straws and using less plastic items. One way you can help is to, bring your own cloth bags instead of using the store provided ones. Think about inputting this into your lives because it takes plastic bags from 15 to 1,000 years to break down and most of us won't be able to live longer then a decomposing plastic bag, now isn't that sad.
Start asking for electronic receipt
- Receipts are not recyclable- Only in the UK are printed 11 billion receipts per year. Environmentally, we’re speaking an entirely different language. According to The Huffington Post, producing paper receipts takes: 250 million gallons of oil10 million trees1 billion gallons of waterAnd that’s just for one year … in the United States alone.
Make Friendly’s On Mineral Spring Into Five Guys
Let’s be honest guys, Five Guys is the best fast food place near us, and it be really awesome for us to have a five guys on Mineral Spring Avenue. Friendly's sadly is old news, and with the recent closing, they’ll have to put something in its position, and I think North Providence needs more new and up to speed places. Not only would putting a Five Guys in North Providence be beneficial for us fast food goers but it would really make North Providence look like a good tourist attraction, with all of the good main fast food places in one street, like how could that be any better? I say we put this Five Guys where Friendly’s is, And I’m sure that if the Town Of North Providence can build a new police station that we really didn’t need, I’m sure that they can spend a few for a Five Guys. Five Guys with its shakes and delicious burgers would really help out North Providence. It would make our dirty old town seem like a fresh new start. Since Wendy’s and Providence Bagel opened, there have been lines and lines waiting to try those new food places, so putting in a Five Guys could really be a good start for making this Town , let alone this street, a more attractive place. One thing people have hated recently is the speed limit change on Mineral, and maybe just maybe this new Five Guys could potentially put that behind us. I know I hated the speed limit change and still do, but if they put a Five Guys near us, I’d honestly forget about the speed limit and just go right there , no matter the traffic. I think I speak for everyone when I say North Providence needs to be “cleaned up” or at least look nice, and while the new Wendy’s and Providence Bagel certainly did a little to help , I think this town can do a lot better. Last but not least, if Five Guys were to build another establishment on Mineral Spring, let’s just say that there’ll be a lot more people going to it, I know I’ll be one of the first to go there, for Five Guys is and always will be my favorite fast food place. So Five Guys, make this happen, let’s get this on Mineral Spring, and make us hungry fast food goers more happy than ever.
are animals in your environment are endanger? do you want to do something?, then vote now!
if we all work together we can make the environment a good place for the wildlife again. we can make earth a place where animals can live not a place where they can eat plastic, lose their home and parish but if we work together and make the world a better place again we can help the wild life, but if this doesn't succeed the animals and plants will parish and we will parish as well because with out other living organisms we will die of starvation and life on earth will the parish so we need to make the world a better place/world. thank you :)
