The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is an independent agency that operates within the U.S. Department of Energy. Tasked with overseeing the nation's bulk power system and natural gas pipelines, FERC is responsible for regulating the transmission and wholesale sale of electricity in interstate commerce, the transportation of oil by pipeline, and the licensing of hydropower projects. Additionally, it monitors and investigates energy markets, produces energy data and reports, and enforces FERC regulatory requirements, all with the objective of maintaining reliable, efficient, and sustainable energy for consumers.
