The Câmara dos Vereadores, also known as the City Council, forms the legislative branch at the local level in Brazil. As a critical part of the local municipal government, it is responsible for crafting and voting on local laws, ordinances, budgetary items, and various municipal affairs. The number of councilors or 'vereadores' each city council contains depends on the population, with the larger cities containing as many as 55 councilors. Serving the interests of the citizens, they are elected every four years through direct voting.
