The Cour Pénale Internationale, better known internationally as the International Criminal Court (ICC), is a global judicial body based in The Hague, Netherlands. Established in 2002 by the Rome Statute, it is the first and only permanent international court with the mandate to prosecute individuals for the most serious crimes of international concern, including genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression. Its principal aim is to complement national judicial systems, by stepping in only when countries are unwilling or unable to prosecute criminals themselves. This global institution bolsters the international rule of law and ensures justice for victims of the grimmest violations of human rights.
