The Camara de Vereadores, also known as the City Council or Municipal Chamber in English speaking countries, plays a vital role in local governance in Brazil. It comprises elected officials known as vereadores (aldermen or councilors), who are responsible for proposing, discussing, and voting on laws applicable within their municipality. In addition to legislating, council members hold the power to oversee the executive branch, particularly through budget scrutiny, and have the authority to investigate local government affairs.
