Australian Football League

The Australian Football League (AFL) is the premier professional competition in the sport of Australian rules football. Originating from Melbourne in 1896 as the Victorian Football League (VFL), the AFL has evolved into a nationwide competition with 18 teams from across the country. Tournaments run annually from March to late September, culminating in the AFL Grand Final, which is one of the nation's major annual sporting events. As a major spectator sport, AFL draws significant crowds and has a significant media presence. It is governed by the AFL Commission, which also has overarching responsibility for the development of the sport.
