Alexander Van der Bellen is an Austrian politician who started his career as an economics professor before entering politics. Born in 1944 in Vienna to Russian and Estonian parents, he served as the leader of the Austrian Green Party for over ten years, from 1997 to 2008. He has been known for championing progressive and liberal causes, such as environmental sustainability and immigrant rights. In 2016, Van der Bellen was elected the Federal President of Austria, marking the first time the Green Party held a top state office in the country. Despite being retired from party politics, he is recognized as a prominent figure in Austrian and European politics.
