The Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (ALERJ) is the unicameral legislature of the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It consists of 70 state deputies, elected to represent the population for a mandate of four years. ALERJ's function is to legislate on matters of state jurisdiction and monitor the activities of the Executive branch, through its governmental control power. It is also responsible for approving the annual budget for the state. Its influence and operations extend over statewide policies and it makes significant contributions to the political and legal decisions in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
