Call for Public Consultation on Permanent Restrictions of South Circular Road Sections

The Issue

From September 2025, construction is set to begin on a cycle lane stretching from the crescent shopping centre to the city centre, permanently restricting sections of the South Circular Road, and allowing residents and local access only access. This road runs parallel to the main O’Connell Avenue and Dock Road, and is a vital artery for countless residents, commuters, and businesses alike, as well as including junctions for dropping off students to the Model School, Scoil Mháthair Dé, Laurel Hill Coláiste FCJ, Laurel Hill Secondary School FCJ, St Clements Secondary school and Mary Immaculate College.

This decision to make some of these amendments were made without consultation with Limerick Citizens

While safe cycling routes are undoubtedly vital for a greener and healthier city, the current plans seem to overlook the enormous traffic burden this will place on surrounding routes like Dock Road, Ballincurra Road, and O’Connell Avenue. As concerned citizens of Limerick City, we are calling for a more informed and strategic approach to these developments.

We are not against the cycle lane itself—we see its potential for promoting sustainability and reducing urban carbon footprints. However, we cannot ignore the pressing issues of increased traffic congestion, heightened air and noise pollution, extended driving times, and more challenging navigation through our city. These are real problems that demand thorough consideration and balanced solutions, ensuring that improvements for cyclists do not come at an unsustainable cost to the rest of the community.

It appears that some of these amendments were pushed through by a majority of councillors, many of whom are not familiar with our community's daily rhythms and needs, and living in the locality. This lack of localized consultation is beyond concerning. The voices of those directly impacted—residents, local business owners, and everyday commuters—have not been heard or considered.

Let us call upon the Active Travel Team to revisit these plans with a focus on holistic development that considers all modes of transport and the community's well-being. This is not just about bikes and cars; it is about the future of Limerick City, striving for harmony between development and quality of life for all who call it home.

Sign this petition to urge the relevant authorities to engage in transparent and genuine dialogue with the stakeholders of Limerick City, to refine these developments for a truly inclusive and pragmatic cycling infrastructure that serves everyone. Together, let’s advocate for a more thoughtful and inclusive solution.
