Das Problem

Today marks a deeply troubling moment for privacy on the internet. The European Parliament has permitted the reintroduction of 'Chat Control 1.0,' a measure previously rejected twice in March, that allows for the suspicionless mass scanning of private communications. Seen by many as a massive overreach, this regulation is a direct assault on fundamental freedoms and privacy rights of individuals throughout the European Union. Personally, I value privacy on the internet immensely, and I cannot sit by as these rights are compromised.

The provisions under Chat Control 1.0 pose numerous risks and set a dangerous precedent. With the implementation of mass scanning until 2028, private communications can be accessed without due suspicion or consent, affecting every resident of the European Union. Such intrusions devalue the core principles of privacy enshrined in international human rights laws. We stand to lose a vital part of our dignity and sense of safety online, as anybody could be subject to surveillance.

Facts speak volumes in our fight against this decision. According to privacy advocates and legal analysts, the continual scanning of private messages can lead to countless false positives, endangering innocent individuals and potentially criminalizing lawful behaviors. The societal costs could be monumental, eroding trust in technological communication systems and pushing many towards encryption methods, which can complicate law enforcement operations rather than aid them.

The European Parliament must reconsider its stance. There are viable alternatives that respect privacy while addressing the concerns that inspired Chat Control 1.0 in the first place. Collaborative efforts with technology experts could offer solutions that balance security with the need for privacy, without resorting to mass surveillance. For instance, targeted interventions based on probable cause and transparent procedures protect citizens while ensuring any monitoring is justifiable and proportionate.

Our digital lives are at stake, and we cannot allow unwarranted mass surveillance to become the norm. We urge you to stand with us in calling upon the European Parliament to overturn this decision. Let us reclaim our right to privacy and ensure our communication channels remain free from unwarranted scrutiny. Sign this petition to demand action, uphold our rights, and secure a future where privacy is respected and protected.
