Cancel Jordan Peterson’s May 26th Event at Prospera Place
The Issue
We call on the City of Kelowna's mayor, Tom Dyas and all council members to cancel Mr. Jordan Peterson's tour appearance, which is scheduled at Prospera Place for May 26th, 2023.
Mr. Peterson's views directly jeopardize the safety and well-being of marginalized communities, especially women, transgender and gender non-conforming people. Violence against women and 2SLGTBQIA+ folks starts with words so giving this man a platform to speak is directly impacting safety of marginalized communities.

Mr. Peterson often lashes out against protest as a violation of his free speech, yet in the next breath he seeks to shame and silence fat models, trans influencers, feminists and the presentations of various cultural elements like burkas. In lacking such integrity, Mr. Peterson actually uses his platform to oppose Canadian values such as free speech, multi-culturalism, and justice for oppressed people like BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ people.
Peterson rose to infamy through his opposition to Bill C-16, the Bill that amended the Canadian Human Rights Act to include gender identity and gender expression. https://youtu.be/KnIAAkSNtqo
Multiple mass shooting perpetrators have referenced Jordan Peterson as an inspiration, and he also can't help himself from defending these attacks when they're related to the bigotry he teaches. In 2018, when self-described “incel”, Alek Minassian, who killed 11 people when he plowed a rented van into a busy Toronto sidewalk, was sentenced to life in prison. Jordan Peterson said in response "He was angry at God because women were rejecting him,”. “The cure for that is enforced monogamy. That’s actually why monogamy emerges.”

Misogynist, anti-feminist (incel), racist, xenophobic, homophobic, transphobic, fatphobic, and ableist ideas are the staple of Mr. Peterson's output. He stands against the professional standards of his own credentials as a psychologist and professor by strategically weaving a web of hate among Canadians with literacy and mental health issues, similarly to the presidential campaign tactics of Donald Trump. Mr. Peterson even apologizes for horrific, fascist policies of Nazi Germany such as eugenics. His barbaric, manipulative behavior creates an anti-intellectual echo chamber for disinformation and the inflaming of bigotry.
Mayor Tom Dyas has the power to stand up to Mr. Peterson's menacing campaign of bigotry and help protect the safety and inclusion of all Kelowna community members. I urge the city to stop this event which is being held at a civic venue operated by the City of Kelowna!
Please consider calling the City of Kelowna at 250-469-8500, ask for the Mayor's and Councilors' office, and leave a genuine complaint or plea for intervention about Mr. Peterson's May 26th event. Explain how it affects you and the people you know.

“Colonial settler policy has had deep and far-reaching consequences for Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ Peoples, which continue today. The ongoing systemic and societal discrimination resulting from past and present colonial practices have compounded the intergenerational impacts of the Indian Act and Indian Residential School System (IRSS) profoundly affecting the well-being and prosperity of Indigenous Peoples and communities. Studies and data show Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ Peoples are at greater risk of harm and targeted by many groups and individuals. As the Final Report notes, “the common thread weaving through... [these studies] is that the violence is rooted in systemic factors, like economic, social and political marginalization, as well as racism, discrimination, and misogyny, woven into the fabric of Canadian society”.2 In the Final Report, The National Inquiry characterizes “these acts, including violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people, as genocide.”https://council.vancouver.ca/20220719/documents/r3.pdf
