Burger King preys on Children of Color in Hyde Park, MA

The Issue

In May 2020, the City of Boston approved the building-licensing of a Burger King (fast food restaurant) across the street from Boston Preparatory Charter School (with 97% students of color population) located at 855 River St., Hyde Park, MA.

Surrounding neighborhood organizations including Boston Preparatory Charter School vehemently oppose the operation of this Burger King and support this petition. We believe that given the cultural disadvantages faced by people of color and systems that serve to exploit them, like providing easy access to ‘unhealthy food’ to minors, stunts the health objectives of our community.

Burger King targeting & profiting from students of color is unacceptable.

Our Goals:

  1. Re-purpose the building in this location that will compliment the goals of the Boston Preparatory Charter School and Greater Hyde Park community.
  2. To introduce health and cultural nutrition programs to the students of Boston Preparatory Charter School and the Greater Hyde Park community.

Health is wealth, so our communities need to instill ‘healthy eating habits‘ at an early age. This predatory move by Burger King and the City of Boston does the exact opposite.
