Let Us Play On The Silverthorne Softball Fields- 40 Years and Counting

The Issue

Petition to Continue Use and Maintenance of the Softball Field Below the Reservoir

To: Dave Rossi, County Manager
CC: Wayne Byrne, Facilities Director
Summit County, Colorado

We, the undersigned residents and members of Summit County’s sports leagues, respectfully
request that the County reconsider its decision to discontinue maintaining the ball field below
the reservoir for competitive sports play.

We understand the financial concerns outlined in your recent letter, including the significant
annual maintenance costs and the outdated equipment required for upkeep. However, we
believe the value this field brings to the community far outweighs the cost of its maintenance,
and we propose that collaborative solutions be considered before permanently limiting its use.

Why the Fields Matters:
A Legacy of Community Use: For over 40 years, this field has been a hub for recreation,
camaraderie, and healthy activity. It has served generations of local families and visiting teams,
becoming a cornerstone of our county's sports culture.

Lack of Equivalent Alternatives: While other ball fields have expanded, many are already operating at full capacity, especially during peak season. Removing access to this field creates a void that cannot easily be filled elsewhere.

Community Value vs. Cost: With over $100,000 spent annually and less than $5,000 recouped in fees, the numbers may suggest inefficiency. However, this field's return on investment should be measured in community wellness, youth development, tourism, and local engagement-not
just dollars.

Alternative Solutions for Consideration:
Public-Private Partnerships: Collaborate with local sports leagues, businesses, and nonprofits to
offset maintenance costs through sponsorship or volunteer support.

Fee Restructuring: Explore modest increases in league or tournament usage fees to help cover
field upkeep.

Partial Use or Limited Season: If full maintenance is not viable, consider keeping the field
operational for part of the year or at reduced service levels.

Grant Opportunities: Apply for recreational or community development grants to fund necessary
equipment or renovations.

We believe that with creativity and cooperation, Summit County can continue to offer this
essential amenity to the community without shouldering the full financial burden alone. We ask
that you hold a public meeting to hear from the leagues and community members directly, and
to explore feasible paths forward together.

Thank you for your consideration and for your service to the community. We look forward to
working with the County to preserve this valued recreational resource.
