As a concerned user, I have observed a chilling trend within the Meta community, particularly Instagram, which poses a threat to minor members. Profiles have begun to share external links leading to pornography, creating an unsafe environment for the impressionable youth. These links contain OnlyFans creator bios. Not only do these creator biographies usually contain explicit language and disturbing descriptions of their services, they also contain explicit, pornographic images. These are links that can be accessed directly from the Instagram profiles of OnlyFans creators. Adolescents who use Instagram will be able to access this content without subscribing or getting behind the paywall on OnlyFans. The creators are using Instagram as “lifestyle influencers”, posting daily about their glamorous lives in order to mislead teens into believing the adult film industry will bring them the same advantages. They openly discuss their work with accounts run by minors. This issue is not just one of personal concern, but it fundamentally stakes the protection of children and young adults.

The legitimate concern is that these easily accessible links expose minors to explicit content from a tender age, distorting their perception of appropriate behavior. This is alarming, considering that a report by Pew Research Centre indicates about 51% of U.S. teenagers use Facebook, a quite significant number to be left susceptible to harm (Pew Research Centre, 2018). OnlyFans creators are contributing to human trafficking of teenagers. Minors are being poached from apps like Snapchat as well. The youngest victim to be featured on the OnlyFans platform was five years old.

Meta’s community guidelines clearly state that sexual exploitation of minors is strictly prohibited. However, it seems that these guidelines are being breached by these profile creators through tacit promotion of adult content. Their content is constantly suggested to underage users and the creators consistently ask the same users to send them direct messages so they can give them access to pornographic content without violating community guidelines. These creator profiles need to be removed from Meta platforms. The issue at hand not only disrespects Meta’s policy but also violates basic human rights to protect child innocence and internet safety for children.

I urge Meta to relentlessly enforce its community standards in creating a safe habitat for all user groups, especially the minors. To reach this goal, Meta needs to take immediate doorstep measures to take down the profiles of creators who offer external links to pornography. The outcome will ensure our children surf the internet safely without falling prey to explicit content.
