Please keep Tribal casinos SMOKEFREE
Please keep Tribal casinos SMOKEFREE
The Issue
Dear National Congress of American Indians,
With COVID-19 restrictions easing across the United States, there is overwhelming concern from Tribal citizens, community members living near Tribal casinos, gaming employees, and gaming enthusiasts that Tribal casinos will reverse temporary smokefree ordinances.
Before the pandemic, there were eight Tribal casinos with 100% smokefree indoor air policies. On May 1, 2021, there were over 165 smokefree Tribal casinos. That number is currently decreasing as the country races toward a sense of normalcy- see updated list here.
The health benefits of smokefree Tribal casinos are clear, especially amid a global pandemic that is not completely over with. With the help of many Tribal partners and other organizations who support smokefree air, there are now many forms of updated evidence that show smokefree Tribal casinos are good for business.
As leaders in Tribal public health, the undersigned, we are urging the National Congress of American Indians to make a statement on this issue. More specifically, we ask that you publicly declare:
1). Your support of comprehensive commercial tobacco Tribal policies
2). Your endorsement of smokefree Tribal casino policies, as previously stated in NCAI resolution #SPO-16-046
Tribal citizens need you to come together to prioritize efforts in ensuring that all Tribal casinos will remain smokefree, contesting the status quo regarding smoking within the gaming industry, and reshaping the narrative of smokefree Tribal casinos.
Thank you for your time and support regarding this pressing matter.
Sincerely,
Tribal Citizens and Public Health Leaders
