Save Our Snow

Save Our Snow
The Issue
English Français Deutsch Svenska
Over recent decades climate change has made the snow and ice melt under our skis, skates, snowboards, literally melt. Yet, professional winter sport organisations are actively promoting some of the companies that are causing the crisis: oil and gas companies, airlines and car manufacturers.
Because of sponsorship deals in winter sports, adverts are everywhere for companies like: Equinor, Gazprom, Preem, Audi, BMW, Volvo, British Airways and Lufthansa, to mention just a few.
For example, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, FIS, is sponsored by the car maker Audi with €5–7 million per year. In return, the car maker gets extensive, global advertising space at skiing competitions and other FIS venues. The Alpine World Cup even carries the company name: Audi FIS World Cup.
Another example is the iconic long-distance race Vasaloppet, which does extensive advertising for the oil company Preem and the fossil car manufacturer Volvo.
As a result, these companies sell more oil, gas and fossil cars – and cause even more climate change.
A lot of things need to change in order to combat the climate crisis. One of the most obvious is for winter sports to stop promoting the very companies that are destroying our snow.
We are calling on everyone involved in professional winter sports to end sponsorship deals with companies that are major drivers of climate change, such as oil and gas companies, manufacturers of fossil-fueled cars, and airlines.

Join our call
We invite snow friends at all levels, from spectators and amateur enthusiasts, to elite athletes, clubs, leagues and organisers, to join our call.
By doing so, you help us to put pressure on national and international organisers to kick out polluters from winter sports and spare us their promotion of pollution. You will also receive campaign updates with news and tips on how you can do more to save our snow.
– I support the call to FIS, its member organisations and all other stakeholders involved in winter sports, to end sponsorship deals with major polluters and drivers of climate breakdown, such as oil and gas companies, manufacturers of fossil-powered cars and airlines.
