Stop awarding live fish as prizes at the San Joaquin County Fair

The Issue

We are asking the San Joaquin County Fair Board of Directors and CEO to end the practice of giving away goldfish -- or any live animals -- as prizes at all future events.

Animal Welfare Concerns:

Goldfish handed out as prizes are often subjected to extreme heat, stressful transport conditions, and inadequate long-term care.

At this year’s fair, temperatures reached 105°, an unsafe environment for any animal kept in a small container. Without proper filtration, temperature control, or preparation by the recipient, many of these fish suffer and die within days.

Irresponsible Pet Ownership:

Animals should never be handed out for amusement. Responsible pet ownership requires planning, not impulse. Giving live animals to unprepared recipients increases the likelihood of neglect, improper care, or premature death.

Environmental Concerns:

Those who no longer want their fish may resort to dumping them into a nearby lake or river, which can disrupt the local ecosystem, compete with native species for resources, and potentially introduce diseases and parasites.

Local Precedent:

  • Berkeley, CA banned this practice in 2017 (Ordinance 10.12.235).
  • The San Mateo County Fair updated its vendor contract in 2024 to prohibit live animal prizes.
  • Alameda County Fair is facing public pressure to do the same. See petition

Brass Ring Amusements' Midway of Fun

Brass Ring Amusements' Midway of Fun is the carnival provider for the San Joaquin County Fair.

We urge the San Joaquin County Fair Board of Directors to update its vendor contracts to clearly prohibit the use of live animals as prizes at future events.
