Alabama Department of Corrections, STOP targeting Bernard Jemison and other truth tellers

The Issue

Truth Behind Bars

Bernard Jemison and many other Alabama Department of Corrections truth tellers continue to be targeted by corrupt Correctional Officers that refuse to display compassion. All these men have asked is for constitutional rights to be acknowledged and human decency to exist from the administration responsible for rehabilitating individuals locked within our judicial system. They have shown time and time again the gross medical neglect and physical and mental abuse carried out by people who have these men's lives in their hands. There is no where else for these men to turn and punishing them when they are crying out for help is an atrocious evil not only to these individuals and their loved ones, but the ultimate betrayal of our civilized society that expects rehabilitated individuals to return and acclimate to everyday life.

As the citizens of Alabama, we request there be a complete reform within our judicial system. We do not need bigger prisons, we need better education and career preparedness. We need our individuals returning to us knowing how to be self sufficient. They need to know how to read and write. They need to know how to grow and prepare their own food. They need the skills to create a career, and the know how to manage the money they accumulate. How to raise families and grow themselves through the trauma they have endured. our current system is not working please stop fighting for the wrong side of history and instead create a more just and civilized legacy for future generations .

LATEST UPDATE 6/18/24:

Dear Governor, Commissioner, Warden and Members of the Media:

I am writing to bring to your attention the unjust situation concerning Bernard Jemison, who is currently in segregation at Holman Correctional Facility. We seek your support and intervention to release Bernard back into the general population.

Bernard Jemison, a well-known advocate for inmate rights and founder of a mutual aid group focused on addressing medical neglect, has garnered widespread support both within the prison and from thousands of individuals in the free world.

A simple search of his name or a conversation with his many supporters will reveal the significant impact of his work and the respect he commands. The incident leading to Bernard's placement in solitary confinement is a clear miscarriage of justice. Bernard was advocating for urgent medical assistance for a dying inmate when he was unjustly segregated.

The gathering of inmates around Bernard was a demonstration of support for his efforts to save a life, not an act of threat or violence towards any correctional officer. We have five statements from fellow inmates and corroborating camera footage that confirm Bernard's actions were solely driven by compassion and a desire to help a fellow human being in need. He did not pose any threat to the safety or security of the facility. Given these facts, we respectfully request transparency regarding Bernard's situation and appeal to the Commissioner to show leniency and justice by returning Bernard to the general population.

His continued segregation is not only unwarranted but also deprives the prison community of a positive and influential figure dedicated to the well-being of others. We urge you to consider the evidence and the significant public support for Bernard's cause. Releasing him from solitary confinement is not just a matter of correcting an injustice but also an affirmation of the values of fairness and humanity.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. We look forward to your prompt and just action.

-Kevin Jeans @Prison_Toks

HELP FREE BERNARD FROM SOLITARY CONFINEMENT:

We need your immediate support for Bernard Jemison, an incarcerated individual at Holman Correctional Facility, who is unjustly being held in solitary confinement. Bernard has been a tireless advocate for prisoners' rights and was placed in solitary confinement as retaliation for exposing another incarcerated individuals severe medical neglect.

Bernard's affiliations with Hope Dealers Prison Reform, the Martin Luther King Center, and the Truth Behind Bars initiative highlight his dedication to positive change and incarcerated individuals welfare. His continued confinement is a blatant violation of his Eighth Amendment rights and due process.

Please join us in demanding Bernard's release from solitary confinement. Please call and email the below contacts to voice your concern and urge them to reconsider Bernard’s solitary confinement. Let's show our support and stand against this inhumane treatment. Together, we can make a difference!

Update on Bernard Jemison. Ended the 17 day hunger to be released from segregation late August. On September 7, 2023 he was transferred to Holman prison into the general population and has had no issues this far with the administration. He's been allowed to have speakers and a microphone every Saturday morning to preach God's word on the prison yard. Men are being encouraged weekly and lives are being changed. A difference is being made in the lives of the guys at Holman.

URGENT UPDATE PER JANETTE of Mass Incarceration Must End

In retaliation of his campaign to reveal the truth behind the walls, Bernard’s dorm was rushed, shook down and Bernard was transferred, in hand cuffs, to Kilby (the same facility the two men who just killed Rubyn are housed). It states in Securus he is in the Infirmary. When asked why, an employee responded he’s being quarantined for 14 days, despite Covid restrictions and quarantining being lifted. We are unsure of his well being at the moment but are working to find out if he is physically ok.
