When courts exclude fathers, children lose vital connections that shape their identity and development. The long-term result? Emotional, social and economic harm that echoes across generations.

A growing number of states including Kentucky, Arkansas, Missouri, West Virginia and Florida have begun to change course, passing shared parenting laws that recognize the value of both parents. These laws are built on a simple truth: fit, loving parents deserve equal time with their children. But in most of the country, fathers are still fighting just to be acknowledged.

If we don’t act now, the system will continue to deny fathers their rightful role and rob children of the stability, love, and legacy they deserve. It’s time to make equal parenting the national standard, not the exception.

We call on lawmakers, judges and decision-makers to take bold necessary action to:

1. Establish joint legal and physical custody as the default for fit, willing parents
2. Enforce parenting time and guarantee equal access to school, medical and extracurricular records
3. Protect children with special needs through stable inclusive parenting plans
4. Eliminate gatekeeping, bias and systemic discrimination against fathers in family court
5. Modernize child support laws to ensure fairness, transparency and direct benefit to the child

Establishing a Legacy Brings Balance Back
Right now, too many dads get penalized just because they’re struggling financially instead of getting the support they need to stay involved with their kids. Fathers deserve real help, to remain active in their children’s lives including flexible payment plans, financial counseling and wellness resources. Courts must play a role in providing solutions, not sanctions. Support shouldn’t feel like punishment — it should serve a purpose. 

We propose a child-centered model that prioritizes long-term stability, emotional well-being and generational wealth:

◾️ A portion of child support is deposited into a high-yield savings account for the child’s future
◾️ The remainder covers essential expenses like housing, food, education and care
◾️ At age 18, the child receives access to their savings paired with financial literacy training to begin adulthood prepared and self-reliant
