The Issue

The Arena Group's recent acquisition of HubPages, a platform cherished by countless writers, has led to a troubling practice. This company is reportedly taking original articles from HubPages' authors and spinning them through AI technology, presenting them as The Arena Group's own work. Even more concerning is their claim to the original URL, which jeopardizes the author's visibility and credibility in search engine results.

Imagine creating a piece that you poured your heart and soul into, only to find it rewritten by a machine and distributed without your consent or acknowledgment. This not only undermines the integrity of the original content but also overpowers its reach and dilutes its essence. Such practices threaten the livelihood of content creators and violate the ethical treatment of intellectual property.

The Arena Group’s approach sets a damaging precedent in the online content world. If content hosts can exploit AI to rewrite and claim ownership of works, the art of writing and storytelling suffers tremendously. There's an urgent need to address this issue before it harms more creators and misleads millions of readers who deserve genuine, human-centered content.

To protect the future of digital writing and uphold the rights of authors, we must petition The Arena Group and other content hosts to respect original works. It's essential they develop fair policies that prevent unauthorized AI rewrites and honor the true creators behind every piece. Join us in calling for transparent practices that safeguard intellectual property rights in the digital age. Sign this petition to make a stand against this encroachment on creative ownership and help preserve the integrity of online content for every writer out there.

Personal Attestations of Wrongdoing:

"My article held the snippet on Google and saw hundreds of views per month for years on Owlcation until I needed to take action in order to keep ownership of my article by moving it to an affiliated site called Discover ran by HubPages. This was once my most profitable article netting over 550k views over a decade and I had no intention of letting TAG alone profit off my hard work. However, The Arena Group went back on their word and had other plans. This feels retaliatory and unethical. I was given the opportunity to move my work and keep control of my content; however, TAG wanted it and they found a way to profit from my work (and cut me out completely), by spinning my content and using my old URL.

My article was spun with AI, even using AI search results to recreate a subpar version of my article. They stole my format, my ideas, and some of my content as well as repurposing my once redirected URL and putting their new version on it. This practice allows them to take all of my backlinks as well as rank at the top of Google search immediately, because this link has years of history attached to it. Their article has the advantage of ranking over my original content because of my past work, despite being subpar.

I'm heartbroken and furious that businesses think it's acceptable to spin content created by others and slap their own name on it, claiming it's theirs. The writers at TAG/Owlcation would not have the content they are producing without the help of AI and taking content from other hard working authors. As freelance writers we deserve respect and recognition for our content. It is not free for the taking." -Cholee Clay (HubPages Author)
