The Issue

The Philippines is the only nation in the world that denies the right to divorce. But change is on the horizon. In a landmark decision on May 22, the Divorce Bill, championed by Gabriela, was approved by the House of Representatives. Now, it’s up to the Senate to pass the bill and provide a necessary option for Filipinos in abusive marriages.

The path ahead is fraught with challenges, as powerful and influential figures oppose the bill. But common Filipinos are fighting back. In a recent survey by the Social Weather Stations, 50% of adults are in favor of legalizing divorce. This shift in public sentiment is a step in the right direction. In a country where 48% of married women suffer physical abuse from their partners, the only options for those who wish to separate are legal separation or annulment, both of which are often long and emotionally draining processes that can cost up to one million pesos. The proposed divorce bill offers a life-saving way for women, children, and even men to break free from lifelong abuse.

We won’t stop until divorce becomes a necessary option for Filipinos trapped in abusive marriages. Take a stand for freedom. Sign this petition to show your support for the world’s last Divorce Bill.
