The Issue

After 60 years of giving joy, unity, and culture to Britain, it’s time the government gave something back without complaint especially if the discussion of repararaitons is off the table.

📜 Petition

In 2026, Notting Hill Carnival turns 60.

From its Windrush roots to the sound systems, steel pans and sequins that colour the streets today – Carnival is one of Britain’s greatest cultural legacies.

It is also the largest street festival in Europe, generating up to £400 million in economic impact each year, while bringing millions of people together in peace and unity.

And yet… it still receives no guaranteed government funding.

Security costs? Community support? Cultural education? All still underfunded.

It’s time to change that.

🎁 Our Simple Ask:

To mark its 60th anniversary, we call on the UK Government to:

LEGALLY PROTECT and ANNUALLY FUND Notting Hill Carnival as an official, publicly funded National Institution and Britain’s Finest Cultural Treasure by Law.

We first demanded:

  • Annual Government funding to secure Carnival’s future.
  • National recognition of Carnival as a protected cultural tradition.
  • Respect for the community that built it.

This Change.org page is NOT the petition itself. It is the campaign hub. Here, you can:

Update (03.07.26): Since launching this campaign, I initially struggled to engage key stakeholders, including MPs, Carnival representatives and others connected to Notting Hill Carnival. Encouragingly, that is now beginning to change. Conversations are opening up, interviews are being arranged, and important voices are starting to come to the table. This campaign is helping to build meaningful dialogue, and I look forward to sharing the findings as the work progresses.

🔊 Final Word: This is about balance, respect, and legacy.
Carnival doesn’t need charity – it deserves recognition.

Let’s give it the 60th birthday it deserves

Note: Please do not make any financial contributions to Change.org. Close to £400 has been spent on here and majority of the signed petitions have come from social media rather than on here. And the reason why I believe this is the case is because we do not operate on platforms like this, so people of our kind will not get to see this campaign.
