Halt the Deportation of Non-violent, Undocumented Immigrants
Halt the Deportation of Non-violent, Undocumented Immigrants
The Issue
My heart goes out to the people who are a part of my life - my husband, my family, my friends - many of whom are immigrants in the U.S. Some of them were born on this land and some of them crossed borders to search for a better life. As a believer in human rights enshrined within our Constitution, the current immigration policies deeply concern me.
Our Constitution is a bastion of human rights, and act as the testament to our civilized society. Despite the clarity of our guiding document, we are witnessing an erosion of these very principles. It is appalling to note, that our President, who is supposed to uphold our Constitution, is trampling over it without consequence. While he may not be causing physical violence, the psychological and emotional trauma he instigates, justifies him being called an American terrorist in the office.
It's crucial to highlight that in 2018 approximately 85,958 immigrants were deported from the interior of the U.S., many of whom had no criminal record. Close to 15% of the deported individuals had lived in the U.S. for more than ten years, establishing themselves and their families as well invested members of the community [Source: Migration Policy Institute, 2019].
We urgently need to acknowledge this reality, not simply for those affected, but for the very preservation of our constitutional heritage. The children of these deported persons have the right to be raised by their biological parents and to have them work and live in America, just like anyone else. It is a fundamental human right.
I passionately urge you to reconsider the current policies forcing out non-violent, hardworking immigrants who have shown nothing but dedication to this country. Make your voice count; let's ensure America remains a land of opportunity for all. Please, sign this petition to halt the deportation of non-violent, undocumented immigrants.
