The Issue

We, the global citizens for human rights and democracy, urgently call for your solidarity with the people of Pakistan in their struggle for true freedom and democracy.

We are deeply alarmed by the visit of General Asim Munir, the Pakistan Army Chief, to the United States in June, 2025. This visit represents not only a betrayal of democratic principles but also a dangerous endorsement of a regime that has actively undermined human rights, justice, and freedom.

General Asim Munir is responsible for an illegally imposed military regime in Pakistan, one that has subverted democracy, engaged in widespread human rights violations, and imprisoned political opponents in military courts. This regime is responsible for silencing millions of voices who demand nothing more than the basic freedoms promised by democracy.

The United States must stand firmly with the people of Pakistan - not with the military dictators who oppress them. General Asim Munir does not represent the will of the people; he represents a regime that tramples on international conventions such as:

  • The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which guarantees the rights of citizens to freely express their will through elections and be protected from arbitrary detention.
  • The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which affirms the right to life, liberty, and security, and the right to participate in government.
  • The United Nations Convention Against Torture (CAT), which prohibits the use of torture, inhuman, or degrading treatment, as is happening under this regime.

OUR DEMANDS:

We call on the United States officials, including President Donald Trump and Pentagon representatives to:

  • Immediately cancel General Asim Munir’s visit to the United States.
  • Issue a firm statement rejecting the military regime and reaffirming the US’s commitment to democracy and human rights.
  • Put international pressure on the Pakistan government to end the militarization of democracy and restore the rule of law.
