PYLUSD Board of Trustees: Condemn Disruptions at School Sites Over State Mask Mandate
The Issue
To The Placentia-Yorba Linda Board of Trustees and PYLUSD District Leaders,
UPDATE: OUR PETITION IS MORE RELEVANT TODAY THEN WHEN IT WAS RELEASED. MASK PROTESTS SHOULD NOT DISRUPT THE INSTRUCTIONAL TIME OF PYLUSD STUDENTS, NOR SHOULD THEY OCCUR ON SCHOOL PROPERTIES.
We ask you to publically condemn physical and verbal abuse against staff and teachers enforcing the mask mandate and to appeal to other “mask choice” proponents that demonstrations should not disrupt instruction time on our PYLUSD school sites.
As schools open across the nation incidences of verbal and physical altercations between staff and parents have become more frequent. A parent assaulted a teacher in Amador County, CA, a parent ripped a face mask off of a teacher in Austin, TX, and at Hewes Middle School in Tustin there was a two-day protest during school hours complete with speakers and crowds on school property.
Parents and board members have gone to great lengths to bring mask choice to PYLUSD using established, political processes. Certain members of the board have used all protocols and procedures available to them as elected officials. Supporters of mask choice have attended board meetings and spoken passionately about their position on mitigation strategies in schools. Until these civil and peaceful efforts change any directives from the CDPH, our faculty and staff will simply be doing their jobs by enforcing CDPH guidelines.
Our students will simply be following the mandates and recommendations that are currently required. Please publicly call for the supporters of mask choice to allow our students, faculty and staff here in PYLUSD to follow these mandates peacefully.
Trustees' “role as Board members is to act both as leaders and as bridges between the community and the professionals who manage our schools.” The PYLUSD Advantage proclaims that “a safe and respectful environment is essential to student success.”
As elected leaders and district staff, we call on you to publicly condemn physical or verbal abuse of our staff and to preempt the disruption of daily operations on our campuses.
Please speak up. Protect our faculty and staff. Keep the peace for the sake of our kids.
Do not sit idle while the same types of altercations we have seen all across county, state, and country happen here in PYLUSD. Please make a public call for peace and civility as we start the new school year.
