I remember the heart-wrenching reality of being homeless as a child. Every night was an uncertain ordeal, a fight for a safe place to sleep until I was about 10 or 11 when my family finally found a home. This struggle is unforgotten and shared by many others across the United States. We see an imbalance of priority. While we strive to be a nation that welcomes all, our own citizens still sleep on the streets every night. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, on a given night in January 2020, 580,466 people were homeless in America. Any country's first responsibility should be to its own citizens, and we currently fail at this solemn duty. I call upon the government to urgently redirect its attention and resources towards addressing homelessness effectively within the American citizen community before we open our doors wider for immigration.
