Allow Italian Exchange Student G.'s Admission to Mariner High School
The Issue
Imagine the excitement of G., a young Italian exchange student, after arriving in Everett, WA. She was warmly welcomed by her host family and had started making Mariner High School her second home. She had met her counselor, received her schedule, bought a school sweatshirt and ASB card, and participated in the club fair. Not just that, she even started practicing with the school swim team, working hard to make the school community proud.
However, recent developments shattered that vision. Just days before the start of the school year, we were informed that G.'s admission into Mariner High School had been unexpectedly denied. The school district's decision came as a shock considering the meticulous effort put into ensuring a seamless integration process for G, as well as the fact that no objections had been mentioned throughout the months of preparation.
With only one district in the area willing to accept her, finding an alternative seems unlikely before the start of the new school year. It leaves G. in an uncertain situation, deprived from participating in local education, sports, and community interactions. Even if she does get in to the neighboring school, there will be the added hardship of beginning again with making friends, joining the swim team late, and travelling farther without school-provided transportation.
We urge the district authorities to reconsider their decision, taking into account the personal, educational, and social setbacks this decision might cause for G. Her readiness and enthusiasm to be part of our community, backed by her initial acceptance and involvement in school activities, demonstrate her commitment to learn and grow with us.
By signing this petition, we request the Mukilteo School District to consider facts over administrative inconsistencies and to allow G.'s admission to Mariner High School. Please sign this petition and support our endeavor for justice and equal opportunities for all students.
