Implement a Walkability/Complete Streets Initiative in Ocean County, New Jersey.
The Issue
Ocean County isn't walkable enough. There are some areas that are exceptions to this, but for the most part, Ocean County is plagued by car dependent infrastructure.
Neighborhoods with no sidewalks, long straight and wide roads or "stroads", and a lack of well placed and well signed crosswalks results in Ocean County being practically impossible to navigate without a car. Which has resulted in Ocean County being the most dangerous place in the state to drive in 2025, with 62 people being taken away from us in car crashes.
We are calling upon the Ocean County Government and Municipal Leaders to introduce a Walkability and Road Infrastructure Plan. We want complete streets, with protected sidewalks and bike lanes, bumpouts, pinchpoints, and chicanes to comb traffic. We want crosswalks with improved signage, like RRFBs or HAWK signals. We want the areas of our communities that were made walkable before the automobile existed to be protected. We want areas that are newly built to in already developed areas instead of cutting down more of our green spaces, and for them to serve multiple purposes as complete neighborhoods.
Creating walkability would not only make it safer for everyone getting around, it could improve traffic/average travel times, carbon emissions, and overall quality of life for Ocean County Residents. We need complete streets in Ocean County.
